Snap-On Ratchet Direction Selector Issues

I've got a 936 and an older ferret series 3/8 Snap-on Ratchet, and they both are difficult to switch the direction. The 936 is more difficult than the ferret believe it or not. They are difficult enough, that I can't normally switch direction with my thumb while holding the ratchet with the same hand. Is this normal?

I don't have any real experience with Snap-On ratchets, and I only recently picked these up with some other estate sale items. I cleaned and lubed both ratchets, so I expect they are in as good of shape as I can get them at this time.

Let's not delve into a discussion of which brand ratchets are better or worse than these Snap-On ratchets.... I own plenty of other brand of ratchets and I don't need advise on replacements.

Thanks in advance for the help.

..... The 936 rats had a tight spring but you should still be able to do it with your thumb.
Try shifting the ratchet with the cover plate off. Sometimes the cover plate is bent a little so that the ratchet will work with the plate installed one way but not the other.
