Just bought this today and want to see if anyone here can help id some things for me? What is the L in front of the S mean? Also is the date code 1940 or 1970? Thanks

Its 70. the S-71 was not made in 40. Not sure why the L was added, but its not uncommon.

Ok I had the feeling it was 1970 cause I didn't see it in a 40's catalog. But
In the 70's one it says "An old time favorite with many tool users." So that
was making me think it might be older. Also when I was searching I found
Something about letters being used for finish on ratchets? Is this right and if
So could that mean the L could be a finish?
