So i was talking to a fellow tech today and he was saying something about possibly taking a lower tooth count ratchet and putting a higher (say an 80) rebuild kit in it. So basically you could get on ebay. Buy a cheaper snap on ratchet. And buy a rebuild kit for an 80 and rebuild it. Bam you have a higher end ratchet. Or covert some of the ratchets you have in your box already. So do you think its possible? Has it been done?

Not possible. The head sizes and shapes are completely different. I'm pretty sure they did that for exactly this reason.

I believe the heads are different. The rebuild kits won't interchange.

Seeing how high even old Snap-On ratchets go for on ebay; sell your old ones and roll the profit into the purchase of dual 80s.... I am still dumbfounded sometimes, at how much Snap-On ratchets bring on ebay; even old 700 series stuff! Go figure!

I don't agree with this.
You can most definitely add more teeth in the same diameter. You can't add more of the same sized teeth but you can most definitely add more teeth, although smaller in size.

You can't make a silk purse from a cow's ear, but you can increase the tooth count in a Snap-On ratchet.

I have a couple of 710 half inch ratchets. One is 24 tooth, the other 36 tooth. I could (heck, I have) swapped them back and forth.
But putting the new 80 mechanism in an old one? Like they said, it ain't gonna happen. Shape is all wrong.

Teeth are ground in to the head of the ratchet you can not add more it is not ever going to happen.
dropping in different internals ( really just pawls ) will not make any more teeth it will gain more points of engagement only.

Just a reminder, if any y'all go from a 20 tooth to 30 tooth, you gotta change the pawl too.
Whats next 90, 100, 110 tooth? Big deal! the fine tooth ratchets don't really have the strength of their lower tooth count cousins. In most cases you don't need the super small degree arc, to make the ratchet work. For most jobs the real fine tooth ratchets don't make a difference. I have never had a 60 tooth let me down yet in a engine compartment.
This will kinda be like the "razor war" you know, they keep putting more blades in the same head. Now on the tool front they will keep putting more teeth in the ratchets!
My buddy stopped by with his dual 80, while we were working on his car, he asked me "what the hell I did to my POS Craftsman ratchets(fine tooth), that made them feel better than his dual 80?" I used his dual 80, it was good, but I didn't dampen my boxers over it.
p.s.I fixed him up with some Permatex green,brake slide synthetic lube, it works well on the fine tooths.

The jury's still out on that. SO says the 80 has 7 teeth in contact on the pull stroke ... compared to 1 tooth with the old series, they might be on to something.

Sure, 7 smaller teeth in contact could be stronger then one, but there are alot of other factors. You only need one tooth to splinter to create a problem with debris in the ratchet. I have heard many problems from other pro wrenchers, about the durability of the 80s, but most of these guys could break just about anything soo.....I'll have to look in my 60 tooth Craftsman next gens next time I lube them up, I think they have quite a few teeth in contact, it is a two pawl mechanism.

Snap-on says there's 7 pawl teeth in contact with the gear ALL the time; I don't know how that's possible, but that's what they say.
