Snap-on Ratchet/Socket Set

I recently purchased a snap-on 1/4" drive ratchet/socket set from a snap-on truck. I wanted a 2018 set so I made sure to look at the date code on the ratchet and a couple of the sockets. All 3 were 2018 so I made the purchase. The following day I was looking at the set and found 4 sockets from different years, as far back as 2010. Is this normal? I just figured everything in a set would have matching date codes.

Curious. So if you looked at them the package wasn't sealed? Perhaps the driver did a quick socket warranty for another customer (s) and replaced the original sockets with other ones?

I have no idea though

Sometimes a dealer will "borrow" a socket and replace it with another, can be for warranty or a need it now thing. Could be they had a few left in the bin that got mixed in as well when it was packaged at the factory.

Also depends on how much product the dealer moves, I've bought new stuff that was a two or more years old per the date stamp.

This kind of thing is really low on any tool manufacturer's priority list. I wouldn't be complaining unless the model is completely different. I've got a set of old Proto wrenches where one size was made before the transition to surface drive.

Completely normal. I bought a set of their torx bit sockets on promo last year. They were still factory shrink wrapped. It contained mostly 2017, a couple 2018, and a 2016 socket. I'd wager when they make a new batch, they just dump them into the same tote containing the old batch. They're fine sockets, date doesn't matter. Use them!

However, i have to ask, what makes the 2018 vintage tools superior to older versions? I mean it's not like you're buying milk with an expiration date Has a snap on 1/4 drive socket changed from 2010? i could maybe see it if you got a mix of old versus current snap on script but, it has been awhile since that change.

I may not be too pleased if the part of the set was finished in hexavalent versus trivalent chromium plating. The two placed side by side, you could see a difference where the traditional hexavalent process produces a brighter finish, while the trivalent is darker.

I am thinking there are some sizes in 1/4 drive either metric or SAE that nobody uses. No warranty replacements and they dont get lost.

A batch of 9/32 sockets would be sitting in a bin for a few years. 2010 is getting there though 9 years ago

There is a lot of knowledge to be gained here if you choose to. You may want to avoid the Hot Deals and For Sale sections if you don't want to go broke. Now that you brought it up post the part # of the set you bought. Most of my Snapon stuff is a little older. There are a ton of Snapon fanboys on this site.

Not really since the product is identical. If they didn't have date codes you wouldn't know the difference. Its not a collectable and its not a piece of technology that's obsoleted in 2 years so its all moot.

9/32"? 11/32" is the standard size for #8 nuts and hex head machine screws, but 9/32" doesn't correspond to any standard or semi-standard fastener I can identify. #4 is 1/4", #5 and #6 are 5/16".
