Snap On Ratchet with no Model Number

I just bought my first Snap On ratchet because I was tired of using my cheap crappy ratchet while tinkering on my old Blazer. I bought the ratchet used from eBay and it is a GF80 Model. It just arrived arrived today and seems legit but there is no model number stamped on the handle and that was not evident in the photos because of the black finish. I called Snap On and the rep said it sounded like it was legit but he wasn’t sure why it didn’t have a model number on it. The same seller has another GF80 that looks identical that does have a model number on it. Has anyone ever seen a ratchet with no model number? I have done some research and haven’t found where there are really any counterfeit ratchets out there but anything is possible. I’m just concerned I may have stumbled on some strange fake. And for the record, if I felt comfortable spending $115 on a new Snap On I would have. I tried to include pics but I had some issues. Thanks!

I’ve messaged the seller and I’m waiting for him to respond. I opened the ratchet head up and it looks legit and had the correct number of teeth. If I don’t get a good explanation from him or hear from someone with a similar ratchet I will likely return it. It’s used which would lead me to believe it’s real but I wanted to get some opinions from some guys who really know these tools. I was able to upload some photos as well.

On eBay there are several regular F80 [chrome finish] all in the $60 range that look fine. A few even have the make an offer option so they would probably take $45.

I've never seen one without a number stamped. If it was me I would return it to the eBay seller.

Why? I've got sockets missing stampings and they turn bolts just fine. You got a deal on a functional legit SO ratchet and people are making a deal over a few stamps. Some people I swear

That looks pretty much like a real Dual 80, guts and all. Given the pics of the front and back of the head and the inside, I doubt that someone would have gone to the length necessary to get all those details right, just to make a few more bucks. I would just put it to work and not worry about it.

It is interesting that the same pawn shop in Texas has 4 out of 9 listings for this item on ebay. And all of them seem to have a painted selector switch, whereas all of the others have a plain metal switch, just like the GF80 on the Snap on website.

Thanks for the replies. The seller told me that he didn’t notice the lack of a stamp and said he would exchange it for one that was stamped if I wanted. He told me that it must have just been a mistake/fluke by Snap On. The other ratchet he has listed is on eBay and his seller name is porche911c. I also saw the ratchets from the pawn shop. They look like they were spray painted but they’re really cheap.

Looks like somehow the roll stamping was omitted. I'd keep it...the fasteners don't know what kind of tool you're using to turn them, let alone what the tool has stamped in it. But hey it's your money, if you want the writing swap it out.

It’s not that I really want the writing I just want to feel comfortable that it’s not a fake. Based on what I have seen and the replies it seems I got a good deal on a real SO ratchet.

You may be kicking yourself 20 years from now. Those rare occurrences are highly sought after by collectors. We're talking big money.

Please post a close-up photo of the symbol on the head of the ratchet between the "on" and "off". That's the date code.

I don't think there is anything to worry about. It is most likely a factory oops that missed the handle stamping process and made it out of the plant. It could have slipped through or an old employee may have brought it home and then sold it. I think it's a pretty cool find and wouldn't worry about it being authentic. I'm pretty sure there is a no stamp chrome ratchet on the bay right now...so they are out there.

Just keep and use the dang thing. Looks like a nice ratchet I'd be proud to own and use.

I have bought a couple of “new” Snap-on tools off eBay and everything went well. But you can’t help asking yourself why is the seller selling this thing at half price.

Thanks again for the replies. I’m going to keep the ratchet and use it. I plan to slowly build up an arsenal of Snap On tools by buying them used. I love the fact that I can buy a rebuild kit if the ratchet ever fails. I see that the forum has a classified section so I’m excited about that as well.

Keep it and try to ransom it back to snap you on for big money

Tell them that if they don’t give you big money for you are going to post their mistake on a web forum....

Oh, wait....
