Snap on ratcheting driver shank question

I picked up this driver lightly used off eBay and when I pulled it apart to add some lube I was very surprised by the look of the shank. It was ground down to fit. Everything else seems to be in good condition. Is this normal? I searched and the only pictures I could find showed shanks that were not ground.

Could be a modified screwdriver with an old 1/4" extension

The inner end should be square.

I don't know if the 1/4" extensions are double knurled like that.

Without a PN stamped, it's tough to tell exactly what piece was used, but perhaps a the "right" shaft was shortened.

I have the Snap On SSDMR4B. It's the same black ratcheting handle but it's the screwdriver version. Mine has only a single knurling strip, not the two section like yours.

Talked to the seller and he said he bought it used off the SO truck and had no idea the shank had been ground down.

You need to inspect the socket that goes into. If the drive end is ground, what did that do to the socket inside the driver? If that is rounded, you can either epoxy what you have in there (not recommended) or return that for a refund (recommended).

All of those handles can be adapted to use all of the available shanks. There is nothing about the handle preventing this. Only thing you need to do is fill up the recess where the spring clip was. I found rubber and nylon M8 washers were perfect fits. But you could also spackle that recess with epoxy putty or jbweld and it would do the same thing.

That is the original shank. I have no clue why they would have modified it.

I agree that it looks like the correct shank. It still has the factory edge on the bottom so it wasn't shortened. I'll pull it apart again later and look at where the shank goes into. Hopefully I can just replace the shank. The handle is in good condition.
