And how do the bits store in the handle? Are they loose to rattle around, or are they clipped in somehow?

As to the durability of the mechanisam, I got one in '99 (Christmas present) and last year it started to skip some. I used/use it alot

What length do y'all find the most useful in the T-handle version (short/reg/long)?

Modifiy it to have the interchangeable shanks and have all three available.

Do these screwdrivers have any play when locked in the non-ratchet position?
I use the in the lock position sometimmes and I find Very little noticeable play.
I dont even notice it.

Have you bought one yet?, I vote orange. BTW my SO man lets me pick the bits that come with my drivers. I've got one with only torx bits, one with hex and one with a mix of phillips and flathead bits.

IMHO. Yes and no.

I am a big snap on fan 75% of my tools are snap on brand. BUT when it comes down to the ratcheting drivers MAC had the better deal. I get to check all my tools out before hand because I have a mac, matco, and snap on dealer that comes to my shop. Snap on kit has a slightly better tooth design but the MAC kit comes with long stubby and T-handle as well as asst bits, flexes, and extensions all for about 150$ less than the snap on kit with less bits and no T-handle.

All in all mac has the more complete package for cheaper, and IMHO they are a bit more comfortable. Just with they had a finer tooth design but its not really necessary for the tool it is.

You would be @ $400+ to put together the same style kit from snap on.

I have a soft handled version which I usually carry in my front pocket, along with a flat tip. Yanking it out when I really need it and my other hand is holding something together can be annoying beacuse the soft grip will grab the cloth of my pocket and the stick comes right out in my hand. I wish the stick could be positively locked into the handle.

the new ones come with 5 bits

The new ones are supposed to come with 5 bits however when I ordered my SGDMRC4A and SSDMR4B they both came with only 4 bits. In each case Snap-on eventually provided the missing bits but it was a real hassle, especially for the SSDMR4B. It took a number of phone calls and E-mails over a several week period to get Snap-on to "investigate". At the conclusion of the investigation they UPS Air shipped the missing bit. Cost them more to investigate and then Air ship than the bit was worth - about $2.00.

Having said that... I really like the ratcheting screwdrivers.
