From what I read here the snap on dual80,or S80s seem to be real popular here.
What is it that makes them better/different to other Snappies?

Thanks

They're a p.i.a to remove, lube and install all the guts if you haven't done it a few times before......
They are stronger. I know that I'll never go back to a low tooth count ratchet after compiling my set of Dual 80s/72s.

I wonder what your matco dealer would say? Wonder what the Hazet dealer would say? Ect ect ect,.

The guy on the corner says he has the best crack in the world. IDK if I can trust him cuz another guy made the same claim last week.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the advantage of the Snapon would be that it's an extremely smooth fine tooth and it has dual paws internally. I personally really like the Craftsman premium and Matco 88 ratchets a lot as well they are in my opinion right up there with the dual 80's, but an extra 4 or 8 teeth does not account for very much difference and the Snapon is arguably smoother and has dual paws making it much stronger.

they are the newest, latest, and greatest. i'm not really a big fan of SO, but i do like these ratchets. as previously mentioned they are about the strongest ratchet built by SO. low swing arc, minimal friction, and they come in many different configurations. 5, 10, or 20 years ago, all a ratchet had to do was be bullet-proof and survive in the hand of a professional mechanic. today they still need to be strong, but with cars becoming smaller and more compact, there is also a need for a ratchet with high tooth count. they must fit into and operate in areas that a standard ratchet can't. thats the differece.

The thing that makes them different from other Snappies is that older Snap- On ratchets are stamped "USA".

I came to this exact same conclusion today after tearing mine down for the first time.

You forgot the Harbor Freight guy too. I was told the new Pittsburgh Pro line comes out of the same factory as the Snap On ratchets.... Just kidding! Not bashing HF I'm actually heading to the parking lot sale today.

What would a used 3/8 S80 go for. I don't own a SO ratchet yet but I'm itching to get my hands on one.

He may make that claim to fame but I doubt seriously it's as strong that say a Snap-On 71-15 from the 40's. A lot smoother though. The Dual 80's are really nice. I havent really tried to find the limits of one yet.

Is there a difference between an S80, and a dual 80?

The half inch drive Dual 80 Snap On ratchet is the "S80". In other words the model number for the half inch drive, basic SO Dual 80 ratchet is "S80", while the 3/8 is "F80".

I'd say that's a thumbs up on the dual 80's then. I gonna see if I can track them down on craigslist locally. Came across a f71 from the 60's for $25 locally but couldn't find alot of info on it. I know it's probably a good ratchet but how many ratchets can one guy have? lol

No problem. I just picked up my first Snap On ratchets, a S80 and F80 and they are magnificent. I don't think I'll ever use my old raised panel Craftsmans again. I am definitely interested in trying some of the 88 tooth Matco stuff too.
