I have a chance to pick this up on craigslist, but a couple hour drive away. The owner says it is around 15 years old and her father paid around $14k for it back then. It is 72" 22 drawer about 28" wide. It looks to me to be a Masters Series KRL but I am no expert. Need advice before I drive that far. It was in daily use in his mechanic shop, but appears to be in good shape. What might I look for from a wear out standpoint?

Nice box. My teacher had one similar his the drawers wore out they sent him new slides for it, other than that it’s been a good box.

I believe the number is krl1023. It is the taller and deeper master series box. It has the older style caster so 15 years old seems about right. As to $14k for it new, that seems pretty high for 2005. I don't believe that box was over $10k new considering my box, the double bank krl1022 was around $6k list. Not much to wear out on them. If a caster fails, that style is no longer available so you end up changing out to the new style.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Slides and casters. Mind you it'd have to be moved a bit or used a lot, but that's the biggies. After that it's dings, dents, and of course, doing a visual down the back and sides of the box to make sure it hadn't been tweaked in some really bad incident (like somone lowering a vehicle onto the top of it), just like an automotive chassis.

So, did you get it? And BTW, welcome to the Journal!!!

So the usual deal is that sellers don't think the MSRP changes & that everyone pays the MSRP for a toolbox. They look at the model number and maybe the build date, look up the current price, and claim that's what was paid way back when.

I will check my 2005 price list later, but think a top end triple back KRL was ~$8500.

That used box in tip top shape trades between $3000 and $5000 depending on where you are, 80% of the time. There are 20% outliers which mean you either stole it or got ripped off.

It got be proper tidy for good money and just from images you can tell it not top end of price.
Check slides and drawer alignment thoroughly and condition of finish/panels, drawer liners and wheels as that effect what it worth .
the drawer top flats take a beating on these and crappy design for price you pay, easy improve with diy wrap carbon fibre or alloy trims .
I expect they paid around 7K for that back in day with no extras.
I wouldn't want pay much over 2200 unless exceptional condition .
They quite a nice layout solid box though and what it worth to you is real question ...

I’m on my way to see it now and hopefully to bring it back with me. Will keep you posted. Thanks all for the advice. I have a 54” Macsimizer now and really like it. Need a second box for a new shop building where I am going to finally have a lift. I just can’t handle working under and on my back anymore.

That was definitely not $14k new. That's a $3-5k box all day. The KRL1023 is a very common box for sale and the back of the box will have a build date.

I came home empty. They wanted $3k and just because I had driven 2 hours I offered $2k because it turned out to be a project, not ready to use. They didn't accept and since I don't need more to do I am glad they didn't. Most of the drawer slides were gummed up with dried lubricant with 1/2 of the drawers hard to open all the way, and a few really hard. The bottom edges of both sides bent from pulling, otherwise all metal and paint were good. The drawer liners were well worn. The casters were stiff and on one the rubber wheel had a large flat spot where it had been dragged on concrete. It needed new casters. It needed all slides cleaned and likely a few replaced. It needed new liners. But I really liked the size and the drawer layout. I like the drawer latching on my macsimizer better, easier to use quickly and works well. So I am still looking.

sounds about right, most I see need fair bit of effort make working box .
I would of probably not even made an offer, if they want good money they could at least make effort improving the slides post sale ...
2K was a fair offer considering gamble on slides and wheels and if don't get through warranty it gets spendy quick , even good quality liners cost is high although an expected expense .
Box layout is great but snapon prices even used rarely a good deal , matco and mac tend be better used buys in terms of condition to the cost .
Least you made effort look and make an offer, never go you never know, and when you keep making effort you get a result ....

Sounds like you're better off not getting it. If I was spending thousands of dollars for a box, I'd expect the drawers to move smoothly and the castors to be decent. Sounds like they didn't do anything to get the box ready for sale.

You'd be surprised how mice those slides work after a soad in brake clean/diesel. I understand if you want a box ready to use, they'll be other box available.

I see many boxes I could interested in farther away. Is having something crated and shipped ever an option. I might drive up to 250 miles to get one that is it. Next time I will make sure of condition beforehand, demanding more pics and information from seller.

Many years ago I drove down to Texas to pick up a KRL I bought off of eBay. I still don't see many good deals listed online near me. My first box was used off the truck, but I'd have to chase one down now.

Good luck and welcome, from OK.

Lot of pics can help but generally even good pics hide a lot compared to actual viewing .
Main thing when travelling fair distance is knowing they fairly negotiable .
I've wasted many hours looking at junk but flip side of that is I never needed buy a new box and have almost 200" of roll cabs for very little money .
I bought a 1023 cheap many years ago, slides did clean well in the the pipe and diesel trick, had pay for wheels, some trim and liners which ups the price a lot, I got 2 sets slides free and a lock .
I prefer matco or mac boxes used as generally you can find better condition boxes at sensible money, the snapon boxes tend have silly claims on box value and less than honest condition remarks and anything really good or a bargain is gone in few hours .

I find the flexibility can change from when you first talk to them and when you arrive from a distance. It is very frustrating.

It can but least you stated intentions on pricing vs condition before turning up and negotiation has a better chance .
Some people are just unrealistic and also make no effort prior to selling yet expect silly money .
buying used boxes much like used cars, you going meet some right ***** and view some garbage but given a few viewing something decent gets found and you met some interesting people and have good memories of some road trips .

I don't think it was that old, it had the double long top drawers and it seems like that was less than 10 years ago. At any rate $3k was a good price, slides & wheels are covered by warranty.

KRL1023 always had that layout, and certainly existed in the 2006 price book. When you look at a box, it is a good idea to snap a pic of the serial number imprint on the side/back. Will have date or date code.

Slides and wheels are covered if you have a good relationship with Snap-on. Don't expect to phone them out of the blue and get warranty coverage if you aren't already a customer in their system. Same thing with your driver...if you don't have a relationship yet, you can't expect to walk onto a truck and warranty.

You need to be the original purchaser for unilateral warranty coverage. Snap-on drivers can sell you a used box and you'll very likely get the warranty from corporate, but certainly from that driver. Otherwise, warranty fulfillment is at the discretion of the person you talk to.

If you have a Snap-on driver, hopefully he can warranty a used tool box for you. I have never been able to for Snap-on parts calling the factory when I am not the original owner.

Paying to have a box shipped would likely be too cost prohibitive.
