It's been 2 days since I got the 3rd on the cabinet so today I wet sanded with 400 grit.
While the cabinet dried I wet sanded the 3 drawers that I had already applied 3 coats to.
When the cabinet was dry I put on the 4th coat it and by that time the 3 drawers were dry so I put the next coat on them.
At the end of the night I had 5 coats on the cabinet and 3 drawers.
I'm going to wait 48 hours before sanding again and applying the 6th & 7th coats.
48 hours later I'll put the final 2 coats on then wait 2 days to start applying the clear coat.
I have all the drawers prepped and should have at least 4 coats on them by Sunday.
When I started the drawers I got them cleaned, primed and stacked but, because there are 16 of them, I kept forgetting which drawers had 1 coat of primer and which ones had 2 or 3 coats so I came up with a pretty simple solution, I got a wax pencil and wrote the number of coats each one had.
After the final coat I'll install the new slides and casters.
Snap-On actually sent me a third set of locking/swivel casters. I called them to let them know but they said it'd cost more the return them than they're worth so I should just keep them :)
It's turning out to be a nice distraction from work stress and other BS.
I should be done in about a week until then I'm enjoying it!

*The paint I'm using is Rustoleum 2X Apple Red gloss.
It's not perfect but it's pretty close.
One of the drawers had some surface rust in it. I primed it and when I painted it I feathered the new paint in with the old and you can barely see the difference.
It was a drawer that hadn't been used much and, because the drawers are almost always closed, I figured it wouldn't have faded much as the exterior.
It's definitely not too far off.

I cleaned several of the slides and plan on lubing them up tomorrow and installing them. The parts cleaner I'm using worked pretty well, you can see the difference between the dirty ones and the ones I've cleaned.

I am working on a similar project, what parts cleaner are you using?

Thanks! I will go pick up some after work today. Looks promising, I don't think my slides are as in as bad of shape as some of yours were.

MPower, they should come out nice! If they don't come clean I would cal Snap-On. They sent me 5 sets of slides and 6 casters (2 accidentally, see the post above) for FREE!

I grabbed these for a steal from Craigslist, my story is similar to yours... I was looking at Harbor Freight and decided I just wouldn't be happy with it in the long run (even though I do believe a HF box would be fine for my needs). I didn't really want to spend the money for a larger box right now so to keep me occupied for the time being I decided to take on this project. I am going to go for the "Storm Trooper" colors, white with black accents.

Nice!! I thought about painting my box in red and the drawer fronts in black but decided not to try getting too creative lol
Post pics along the way, I'd like to see your progress and finished product :)

///MPower, I applied my 6th and final coat of color 2 days ago and let it dry until today when I wiped it down and applied 3 coats of clear.
After the 3rd coat I noticed this effect (see pics)
I can only assume this happened because of the high humidity.
I don't have any experience with painting, really so this is all a learning experience for me.
I don't know how familiar you are with it so I wanted to give you a heads up in case you're in the same (novice) boat I'm in.
We're supposed to get slightly cooler weather (and lower humidity) this week so I plan on sanding these 2 spots on Tuesday and hopefully I'll be able to paint them on Wednesday and have clear coat on it by Friday.
How's your's coming?

oh man, that is no good.... I was planning on painting mine with a spray gun and PPG paint (Overkill but I wanted to see what I could do with it). However, after I spoke with an old friend that taught me how to paint and used to do body work, I have decided to get it powder coated. He explained to me that the price of paint has skyrocketed in the past 10 years and it's not worth it. He also mentioned that the humidity right now would be an issue. I originally thought powder coating would be more expensive but after pricing PPG paint and all the supplies, powder coating sounds like the way to go. I am currently waiting for the final quote from the shop but that is most likely the way I will go with it now.

Any more luck with yours?

I know it's been a while and I'm probably going to be the only one to read this but I FINALLY got the cabinet done.
Due to issues around the house and the weather, it took two months to do it but it's done!
This was my first attempt to restore a cabinet and there are some areas that didn't turn out perfect but it looks a lot better than it did when I got it and it'll serve it's purpose very well :)
*All new slides and casters courtesy of Snap-On!
What do you think?

didn't turn out bad for cans.
I done a few boxes over years and I tend stick with using paint gun and epoxy or 2K paints, no clear coat .
Looks nice in pics, fre slides and castors was saving grace on this project .
Box really was worth about 350-400bucks as condition wasn't great .
Good usable box at end of day and retains value which never a bad thing lol .
Enjoy loading it with tools and using it ...
