One for sale not locally on CL. I haven't been abel to find out much like tooth count, etc. How would it compare to newer ratchets like the S80, maybe the newere Armstrong, etc? In 3/8", I have an FL80, an F80, an 88 tooth Armstrong, SK, Craftsman, and maybe a Husky? The F80's blow away the others. WOuld the S710 be closer to the F80, or one of the others? Tooth count is important, I want more than 36 teeth, but resistance is more important.

Trying to figure out if this thing is worth picking up, or if I should just look at something like an Armstrong.

It's not going to be anything like an F80. For starters F80 is 3/8" drive, s710 is 1/2" drive.

It's an old ratchet. It will will work and Is dependable. It has 36 teeth. It won't be an 80 tooth ratchet ever. If it's < $20 it's worth it.

I found a SL710 which is basically the same thing, they are 24 tooth not 36 though. Sounds horrible right? Except it really isn't. I'm surprised by how smooth and tough this thing is. I'd like to get an SL715 to match but the long handles command way more $. If you can get it for cheap you probably won't regret it.

Hi, I have a S710 and S715, both from Ebay, total cost 50.00.
One had the selector lever broken off,( It was listed "For parts/broken") 20.00 bucks later I had new gear kits from Snap On. They are not silky smooth, but they get the job done. I don't use them much but for breaking loose a caliper mount bolt or suspension part, they are my go to. They like oil (I use Marvel Mystery air tool oil) not grease, but for as much as I use them, the replacement gear kits will never wear out.

I think it was optional.
Mine is older with its original guts (I think) and has 32 teeth.

Interesting. Mine is a '77 and is 24 tooth. It's my only Snap-on rat, they're just too pricy even used, unless you can find a deal. For a non pro. But even with my "relic" I can see why they command the $.

Edit: I lied. I also have an S-71 that has the same 24 tooth mechanism but with the old school I-beam handle. I don't really ever use it. Don't like it as much as the SL710.

My sl832 is my go to 1/2" ratchet. It's strong and at least 15-20yrs old without any issues. Mainly gets used for suspension work and turning over engines for timing belt/chain jobs and valve adjustments. Rarely do I wish it had more teeth at 32 teeth.

I think they offered both options for a while.
And then there's the whole swapping gears n pawls thing.
I hear you about those I beam handles. They just don't feel as nice.
