Snap on screw driver turned white.....

Well the shank on my old snap on screw driver came out, its one of the ones that holds the bits in the handle and you can switch them out. So i boiled it in water and was gunna try and hammer the shank back in but the screw driver turned white....? Anyone have this happen before

I have never stuck a hard handle in boiling water ( I thought that was only good for soft grips). But I know the early hardhandles had a problem with turning white and cracking. Pictures?
