Snap-on side cabinets locked w/no keys...

sorry don't have pics yet, but I got 2 Snap-on smaller side cabinets that are both locked and no keys. What's the cheapest/easiest way to fix?

Take them to a locksmith? What might that cost?

they are the ones that have a lip and hang off the side of the box, pretty sure they are just shelves inside...

I will probably get them unloaded tomorrow...

2 - You could pay big bucks for a locksmith to try to pick the lock. No guarantee, possible damage, here's your bill.

3 - You could drill the lock out. But then you'd have to pay for a new set of locks from SO anyway.

Option 3 is the fastest, but will leave you with damaged locks that will have to be replaced.

My locksmith has a computer program to cut a key from the Snap on number. First key is like $10-12, but the second only a couple of bucks. I bought a KRA53B with no keys, and he fixed me up.

you give them the number and they cut the key or the # they mean is like a general style and they send a blank?

i don't know diddly about locks

You give the locksmith the code stamped on the lock. They look it up on computer software or code books, this tells them the actual cuts for the key and they cut the key.

Looking at your picture, it appears to be a double sided lock, so it will only be 1 or 2 possible blanks.

Not to digress too much, but if you were trying to get keys made for certain office furniture and it just had a number code, it may be any of a dozen brands, so you'd need to provide as much information as possible.

What series is the lock number? Does it start with a Y then 3 numbers or LL series? If so there is a guy on ebay that makes them for ~$7 a set shipped. If they are the older 4 digit, all number then you will have to go through snap on's lock company. They way those lock you need to either get the key or pick the lock to avoid damaging them.

What are the model numbers on the boxes? Back story? Price? Details man, details.

4 - You could get a hairpin or paperclip and a pocket screwdriver or other tension wrench and practice your lockpicking skills! There are tons of how-tos on youtube. Plus, if you succeed you'll feel really awesome!!

ok, they are KR286D cabinets, also got a KR657B but that has the key.

Lock 1: K7300

Lock 2: K691

best thing to do is contact snap on customer service and tell them what the lock number is and they can have keys made for it. I did this before and I paid like $12 each for keys for my KR1000's

There are code cut keys on eBay for ~$5 (as of 3 months ago).

When they have a number on the cylinder it's easy to take them to a good locksmith who can look up the codes and cut you new keys on the spot. I've done this several times.

Go to he pro-lok or HPC website and print the lock picks out and trace them onto old hack saw blades and make your own picks. The tension wrench can be made that way too, it should take a few minutes of trying and it will be right open. Making the pick will take longer than getting the lock open.

If it's single sided it's a breeze to pick with a rake and a tension wrench - think a wavy bent paperclip. Double bitted is tougher... but that only works for opening the lock one time...still need a key to use the box functionally or gotta replace the lock.

not intended to offend - just educating. Hack blades are often 1 time use picks, and often not even successfully used especially if the user is inexperienced.

If you're going to go through the work associated with actually making a pick, breaking it on it's first use is going to get you tearing out your hair. I'd just buy a pick or 2 at around $3-6 ea rather than the associated work making them, but if you're inclined to make your own shim stock is far better material and almost as cheap as saw blades.

I made some many years ago from blue steel strapping that is used in shipping. worked so so, nothing like the commercially made picks I have used.
I was just looking for some broken key extractors and found several suppliers of picks online for the above prices.

The best lockpicks I have are the ones a friend made from Starrett feeler gauge stock. I mostly use commercially made ones though.

Old feeler guages work great for lock picks and turning wrench. Also as someone mentioned, a bent paperclip works great as a raker pick. I can pick the locks on my SO boxes in about 2 seconds. Very easy to pick.

I have 3 different cases of picks...while I am not the best picker, I can usually get in to my old locks!

I've found that the strips from windshield wiper blades work really well for tension wrenches. Some sizes can also make good picks. Hypothetically speaking of course.

But for this case, since the keys are so easily obtainable, just buy a set.
