While riding my bicycle this morning through a busy intersection during rush hour, I saw what appeared to be a Snap-On socket embedded in the tar that is used to seal cracks in the asphalt. I found six sockets in total. Two are full of tar. I will leave them in the sun for softening. Is there a chemical to remove any residual tar after I scrape out the big chunks?

TIA
Paul

I would soak them in Gasoline or Acetone (outdoors & in a glass jar for a few days).

Lacquer thinner/acetone/gas in a jar for a day or so should do the trick.

Perhaps use a heat gun first to soften the tar and dig out as much as you can then put them in a jar of solvent to remove the remaining residue.

Of all the suggestions here I think diesel or gasoline is what ashphalt guys use to clean their shovels. I'd try that first.

Yeah. I used to deliver the stuff in a tipper(dump truck to you I think) and it always got a spray of diesel on the tail door before tipping to make sure it didn't stick.

Use only Snap-on diesel for best results. It comes in a red bottle with the genuine Snap-on logo. Costs $75/pint, but it's fully warranted and includes personal service and advice from a tool truck guy. You don't even need to keep your receipt!

Snap-on diesel…an "investment". Be sure to wax the bottle before use.

Since they're Snap-on, only expensive and scarce RP-1 will do.

Results for someone else experiencing a similar issue :

Since I was unable to find any of these Snap-On products, I was forced to go with a different method. A couple of hours in AZ 110 degree sun/heat to soften the hardened tar. Popped out tar with screwdriver (not Snap-ON). Then, about 12 hours soaked in bad gasoline. Came out squeaky clean.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions.

If they are squeaky, you should probably oil them. Glad you got them clean. I hope the warranty holds up since you didn't use the required snap on cleaners. haha:D

How 'bout some pix of these acquisitions?

You screwed up OP...You should have immediately posted them on Ebay as "Rare Snap-On Tar finish sockets"...You could have gotten three times over list price...Ohh well...
