I found this picture in another thread and wondered if anyone knew the part numbers for the replacement grips? And/or if they are still sold? (I'm interested in the top orange with black script soft grip, not the orange hard handle."

:dunno:why do they do that? nothin stays around for a while, peoples tastes change. It seems to me that latley SO is discontinuing more stuff. Like the double box socket wrenches. Or the deep off set short metric box. But when you look at Williams catalog you can still buy the double box socket wrenches. Why not still offer them? They're still making them just with another name. Its like more of the unique stuff for special application is phasing out. I know they need to watch costs and inventory, but the catalog selections today VS even 5 yrs ago are much different for options. IMO:dunno:

I'd never seen an orange handle like that, but after seeing this thread I picked this FH936A up on eBay... It's different from the black/red black/green soft grip handles they sell now, the orange part is hard plastic. There's no rubbery coating to it. It's actually like a transitional style of hard handle. I like it... I think I have a new favorite ratchet.

Heres a couple pics for the green guys!! I got this Rat about 5 years ago when my Snappy guy just wanted to get it gone! I guess they were not very good sellers at all. I haven't used it much, it is really comfortable in the hand, I just prefer a longer handle on my 1/2" drives!

I do like that red one! My truck guy has a used long handled 3/8 ratchet with the green handle. almost bought it a few times but the other shiny things on the shelves always distracted me :lol_hitti

So I am looking to start buying some SO, and was going to start with replacing my ratchets.

So here is my question, and I did search.

Are the ratchets actually different from regular full chrome to the comfort handle.

I ask this because I am wondering if I were to purchase

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Snap...Z150584285332QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools

Would I have be able to buy a regular ratchet, or would I have to buy a ratchet that comes with the handle? Just a little cheaper to buy one w/o handle.

The handle that the grip goes over in comfort grip and hard handled ratchets is smaller than the full chrome handle. I suppose you could turn the handle down on a lathe but to me it would be easier to just get the comfort handled ratchet and be done with it. Also, the prices of the replacement handles on Ebay are about double (more with shipping) what they would cost off the Snap On truck.

Thanks!

I dont feel like turned any ratchet, maybe a Powerfist, if I really needed to.

That was the solid answer I was looking for though, better than being led down the wrong path, do you know PN's of these handles? Or if they are even featured on-line?

Basically, I've set my mind on ORANGE. I love their electric orange, and I havent seen it as commonly as green or red, except the odd screwdriver.

I think these are the numbers for the black comfort handles with the orange trim:
Th936-12o for 1/4
fh936-12o for 3/8
sh936-12o for 1/2

maybe one of the SO truck guys on the forum can confirm?

I plugged all of those into the SO website, and they came up as you stated, 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 orange handles.

This makes me want them even more.

I need to get an impact first, for some reason, throughout my tooling adventures, I never picked up an impact, though Napa has a $75 with a trade it, and I just so happened to have found a broken down Blue Point impact at the junkyard. :D

EDIT: You said black with orange trim, was this a typo, or is that correct, orange TRIM is better than nothing, though I'd quite enjoy orange with BLACK TRIM..

Black with orange trim is the standard soft grip. Orange with black is not available per the so dealer.

I've seen the orange with black trim come up on Ebay a few times but there's usually a ratchet attached to them and they usually go for 50% more than new and in used condition. It's rare but the handles themselves come up once in a blue moon and they get pricey. Only problem is that the odds of being able to get them go down because a lot of US sellers don't ship to Canada. A lot will if you ask but there are some that have had bad experiences either with packages getting "lost" or delays at the border cause the buyers to get upset and the sellers just don't want to put up with the hassle - totally understandable to me. Not sure how much experience you've had with Ebay but it does pose a challenge sometimes. That and the shipping costs are sometimes on the high side.

I think personally I'm just going to go with the standard black with orange trim myself and if I come across a decent price on the orange with black trim I'll pick some up and reuse the other ones somewhere else.

good luck with your quest for the elusive orange handles!!

My snappy driver showed me one that a tech had bent. The soft handle is definitely a weak point and that's exactly where he bent it. One thing he told me (without meaning to) is that they designed the soft handle so the back cap snaps off if you use a cheater bar. That way, they will refuse warranty if the rear cap has been snapped off.

Not to open a pandora's box, but I have had more trouble warrantying snap-on tools than any other brand. Seems like they will find any loophole they can to avoid warranty. My Cornwell guy tells me the ceo of the company personally visited all the driver trainees and told them if it says cornwell on the tool, warranty it with no questions. Who knows.

Good deal on that thing, but don't use a cheater bar with it or you'll find out the hard way what I'm talking about.

gunbunny119, I think your SO driver is the exception to the rule. I've never heard of Snap On refusing warranty because the end cap on a comfort handled ratchet snapped off. My driver warrantied one a few weeks ago for me. I brought it to him with a head that skipped and a mangled handle (end cap was hanging off though not from using a cheater on it) and he put a repair kit in it, slipped on a new handle and sent me on my way - and didn't even question if I bought it from him or not - which I didn't.
Many people here on the forum have brought mangled and rusted tools to their drivers or sent them in to Snap On corporate and haven't, for the most part, had issues. I doubt a snapped off plastic cap would cause a warranty refusal. If that were the case, they'd never warranty a shattered socket because they could blame it on many different factors to justify refusing the warranty for abuse. That and I can't see a $7 handle being worth ******* off a customer.
that being said, I'm sure if the end of the handle was snapped, it would give him a clue to look more closely at the rest of the ratchet to determine if the ratchet was abused (ie. deep cheater bar grooves in the chrome). I have heard of warranties being denied because of obvious abuse like that though in my experience(somewhat limited), the drivers just put a kit in or replace a handle and tell yo uto have a nice day.
