I just impulse purchased a set of Metric and Standard SO open end speed wrenches. I did it because in the last week I have been working on old Ford and Western Star dump trucks with Cat 3208 and C-15"s in them. One often had a valve seat drop and the other a broken rod. I had to pull the compressors and starters on both. I was thinking these wrenches would help with the top RT bolt on the air compressor that is a PITA to get out and takes forever. I am hoping this set helps with stubborn tight tolerances. I have used other open end ratchet wrenches but never was completely sold on them. I would like some reviews on them and some experiences of their benefit if any. Thank you. At the berry least I will have another nice set of box end wrenches I can thrown in my service truck.

not sure exactly what wrenches you're talking about, but most of the truck brands used to have special obstruction wrenches specifically made for starters and air compressors on older diesels

Based on other posts, sounds like you really did not mean SPEED WRENCH (see example below for Northern Tool example).

Instead, appears you really mean combination wrench (ie open-end on one end and box-end on the other).

Post up some pictures and clarify so we'll be in the loop.

No, he meant open end speed wrench, because that's what Snap-On calls them. Also known as an open end ratchet wrench. The open end has one jaw cut shorter, and the end is cammed differently, so the end can "ratchet" around the nut/bolt.

I have the Double Open End Ratcheting Armstrong wrenches. They work similarly. I like them for locknuts, and corroded fasteners, especially if disassembling something that uses longer bolts or threaded rod. They need about the same clearance as a regular open end wrench, but work much quicker on fasteners were you would normally have to remove the wrench and keep repositioning it. Great for fasteners in some awkward corner were you can't see the fastener, but just have to feel for it. I believe there is another thread on the forum were someone mention one of the major automakers used them on an assembly line for quickly attaching flare nuts. Personally I really like them and keep them in my small go to tool kit.

Cool . . . my bad. Only seen those once so didn't know what they were called either . . . thus, a specialty ratcheting combination wrench.

Found weblink that showed a whole set (see below) of Snap On Speed Ratcheting Open End Box Wrenches.

Good luck with the repair!

I have a set of the flare nut/speed wrenches and really like them for fuel lines that you've broken loose but are still too tight to turn by hand.

I have used those before and liked them a lot. But I can't justify the cost given I already have ratcheting box end wrenches, and for me, most of the time the box end works.

No my girlfriend is actually pretty good I'm the one constantly saying we need to save money we need to put something aside and then when she buys something stupid she throws my tool purchases back in my face. I actually did have a goodnight with her last night. I don't remember coming up for air even though after that I made a mistake and I bought three Matco swivel sockets on eBay I already had that I thought were metric part numbers but were actually standard. Stupid stupid stupid I'm still kicking my self she just laughed at me. I think she knew I was more upset that she was going to get. I have never done that before.

I have a few of those, wish I had a set but unavailable any longer. They work well on trans lines, fuel lines, etc once they are broken free
