Non fanboy speak - when your control arm snaps, worm clamps and a combo wrench is a good alternative.

At the MORE 250 our pit crew helped another team driving a VW Thing with a bent front beam. We used a bottle jack to bend it back the best we could; we then welded in some Craftsman raised panels as gussets. They ended up finishing 3rd in class and gave us a shout out on the podium.

It probably designates which tool set it belongs to, most limely an in car tool bag designation. Most of these teams have multiple cars but have designated mechanics and prep guys for each car. All tool bags are probably inspected/accounted for during prep. Appears to be an acid etch, which makes me believe it was done by the team and not Snap On.

FYI, Snap On acid etches tools for you, at least in the UK they do (where this team is based). Bought a complete toolbox for a team 2 years ago and every single item, even down to the drillbits, came with the team logo etched into them.

This is part of why WRC (and rally in general) is awesome. I've seen some crazy repairs done on stage. I frequently work medical for some of the US rally championship events. Sometimes they even take (buy) parts from other cars and modify them to fit on their rally car (saw brake pads from a Subaru STI be modified to fit a Scion XD)

Once, a guy in a rally spec Lancer Evo even bought an engine from a fan who had brought his Evo X to the rally. Swapped out the road car Evo engine into the rally car and finished the race. Finished fairly well too IIRC.

The mechanics for the top teams are incredible too. Transmission swap in a few minutes? Absolutely.

Wrenches are a std repair part in motor racing aren't they??

This was a while back when we were racing 4x4's in winch challenges. Brutal stuff. Broken panhard on the winch truck. Out in the bush with 1 stage of racing still to go... Got welder... Any steel around to reinforce this... Ah well, we never liked that spanner much anyway...

We can't afford snap-on but this one held fine for the next stage.

Funny, I did question in my mind why a race team (which wouldn't carry any unnecessary tools) would have a 9 mm along for the ride.
