From what I hear the tech students get 50% off of tools. If this is true why dont people have them buy the tools we want for us and save 50%? Or is this going on already?:headscrat I know dishonest but I am just curious.

because we can only spend a certain amount, and cant buy more than one of each item, and we want the tools for ourselves. If you want the discount sign up for school

I had the 50% discount while I was going to Wyotech. Too bad I still couldnt afford them. I wish they would let the discount continue for a few months after we graduate, then maybe I could have taken advantage.

I understand the Moral decision. I really do, "but" are snap-on prices even moral? I have 50-60k in snap-on so please dont preach to me why they are worth it. In "my opinion they are the best tools hands down, "but" they still are way too expensive. 50% too expensive? Maybe not, but my main objective for this post was to see if anyone came up with a way snap-on regulates this abuse? How can they afford it?

they regulate it by only letting you buy 7500 worth of tools at retail prices, so its really only 3500 to 4000 worth with the discount. I can only buy one F80 for example, I cant buy 10 if I want to. And since students can only buy one of each item usually the will keep if for themselves unless they drop out. I know If I dropped out I wouldn't sell the tools for what I paid, id try to get as much as I could for them.

The tools and boxes the students are allowed to buy on the 50% discount are limited. Most techs that are in the field for any length of time already have the basic hand tools they need (which happen to be what Snap-on sells to the students).

As stated there is a fixed amount that works based off retail price so you can only spend a few thousand dollars which, in SO land really only gets you the basics anyway, especially if you need a box. And there is a QTY limit to 1 of each item.

As far as the catalog it totally seems to vary by region and rep. Some get a limited selection of the basics, others have stated their reps [industrial?] have zero problems with ordering just about anything in the SO system.

Oh and SO still makes a profit. Do not fool yourself for one second that they cant profit charging someone $50 instead of $90 for a ratchet.

I see. That makes sense. I guess it just burns me a little that after spending so much over the years I still cant get my dealer to "deal". I ordered $250 worth of stuff on friday and I am paying $250. More jealous than anything I guess. He is going to "deal" with me on my filter wrenches I plan on ordering or I am going to switch brands. Dont get me wrong I think it is great what they are doing for the up and coming tech's but why does it seem it is at my expense?

Does it have to be certain tech schools? What about autobody classes at a local community college? Any info would be appreciated.

thats why I only buy online "ebay and here" brand new stuff with at least a 30% discount. I will NEVER step on a tool truck again. its too easy to find stuff online wayyyyyyy cheaper.

The school has to be part of the program. I think they sign up for it and SO checks them out and says yay or nay but I'm not sure. When we first started our SO rep came out and told us all about the program and told up why SO tools are so great vs everyone else. Basically a big sales pitch

Do you need to be a full time student, or can you go down to your local Vo-Tech and sign up for one three-hour-a-week welding class or something?

You are supposed to be full time but... I guess it would depend on the school if they would overlook it or not.
