Snap-On taco cart gets a mate

After three years of looking locally, I finally gave up, paid too much, and had a KR-650 freighted from across the country.

I still have some clean up to do, but am very happy to have a nice mate for my KR-562E. I haven't decided whether to keep the old Mac top box, or sell it to recover some costs.

Whats the appeal of that style of box?

TL;DR - Cause I really like them both.

If you mean the taco cart, it has a lot of things I like. It's built like a tank. It may be the most robust box Snap-On has ever built. The KR1000 might have a claim on being as robust, but nothing surpasses it.

The layout works really well in my garage. The shorter end drawers are a great place to store things I want quickly when I'm in the house. Screwdrivers, nut/bit drivers, adjustable wrenches, cutters, etc. The front drawers are large enough to be useful without being so large that every drawer is a cavern of stuff to look through.

The rear cabinet for consumables is useful since my garage storage is mostly open shelving, and it's really big (4 doors, but room for about 5-8 vehicles). I don't have to hunt for brake clean, lubes, solvents, etc.

I actually prefer good friction slides to BB most of the time. I don't have to worry about detents or locking mechanisms. A partially open drawer stays open in the position I leave it. The slides are smooth, quiet, and predictable.

Last, it was available at a smoking deal right around the time I was looking for a used SO box.

If you're talking about the top box, it's special because it's the biggest top chest available in the same vintage. The KR-550 and KR-650 are the closest good "mate" to the KR-562. I think when new, the KR-562 was paired with a road chest for the top.

Dumb question. Why are they called taco carts? Don't ALL big, rolling toolbox look like a taco cart? What make THE Snap On Taco cart THE taco cart?

Serious question. Thank you. Indexmill.

Drawers on two sides and swing out doors in the back for more storage. Taco cart is referring to the carts street vendors use, which also make use of multiple sides of the cart.

I really like the look of the older Mac, but the new top box is a fitting mate to the taco cart. One question and maybe it's an optical illusion, what is the vertical red piece on the left side top on the new box?

Mmm, tacos. Taco wagons were/are really popular for aircraft maintence and industrial maintenance. They work well being drug from place to place with a Taylor Dunn cart.

Thats a cool set up, everything in my shop is pretty much on wheels, that would would great. Kind of an island set up in a kitchen.

Great looking set up. And I don't think I have seen a nicer Taco cart that hadn't been redone.

I agree with your assessment on the the quality of the taco and KR1000. Can't be beat.

Taco carts won't work for a lot of folks but man I would like to have one. I would even consider painting it extreme green as a focal point of my tool store.

I would love a taco, especially one as nice as yours.

When I worked for a guy who had a few planes, we would need to take the box over to the maintenance hanger so we could do the annual or the 100 hr inspection on the planes. The maintenance hanger was a few hundred yards, maybe a half mile or so from where the planes were kept. I would sit on the tailgate of the pickup, put a ratchet strap around my waist holding me to the truck, and pull the toolbox along the taxiway to the maintenance hanger. If something bad happens, I could just let go. Turns out a Snap-On Taco box is good for about 10 MPH before the wheels start to vibrate really bad.

To tell you the truth, the MAC box looks better sitting on there than the SO box. The SO box is supposed to pair with a different roll cab.

We put a pivoting drawbar/tongue on our taco carts at work.

I had to go back and look as I first thought this post was a bit snarky, but proportionally, you have a point. but looks don't top functionality and who can't use more tool storage:lol_hitti
