found a old well used 9 drawer drop front snap on tool chest with friction slids at local flee maeket for $40.00 needs blasting and new paint due to alot of rust on bottom mainly but is still solid and heavy as hell all drawers function well
where can I find the #s to help Id it so I can get the parts and lock for it allso any ideas on removing the drawers

I had the same drawer removal question 2 days ago. What I found is that the slide has a spring steel clip which needs to be pressed so that it doesn't catch. I found a 3/32 allen key slipped well between the drawer and the slide works to push the spring steel clip away from the drawer catch. I also found the ppg number for the paint (for red anyway) if you'd like it. As for serial number, I couldn't find one on my box. I do have an old snap on catalog which I was able to find my box in. If you describe it to me maybe I could find yours. When you get the drawers out, there will be a date stamp in the side. Mine was 1958.

I've got a Snap-On box I bought in the 60's. It came with 2 drawer removers that you slide in each side to pull the drawers. You may be able to get them on the Snap-On web site.

The drawer slide removal tool is basically a 3/8" wide piece of spring steel that you slide down the side of the two halves of the slide mechanism. It goes between the stop and allows you to pull the drawer out. They come in different lengths and are available on the tool dealer trucks. All brands use the same method, so any tool truck should have them. As for the lock issue, I use replacements from True Value Hardware and they cost about $5.00 each. I got a bunch that were keyed alike, and I rarely ever lock my boxes, but it does fit the hole. If you look on the back of the box, you will usually find a model # and a date stamped into the metal. Put white lithium grease on the slides and it will work like new. I am in the process of restoring 3 boxes that I bought this past spring.

thanks for the help guys I went to the snap on site under parts looked all the chest in there but didnt find mine until I looked where junkman said and there it was under the rust
It says KRA 59A Snap On corp Kenohia ws 65 0248421 (which was in the snap on site just no image or discription thats why I didnt IDit) so is the 65 the year piper it was stamped in the lower right hand corner of the back if that helps find yours and yes I would like the paint code for snap on red
as for the drawers I used hacksaw blades on the bottom drawer but can only get one side lose the other wont move at all cant even get blane in there more than likly rusted will have to work with it
Hey junkman love the colection of old boxs you have found only wish I was that lucky I really like good old boxes I allso have 60s waterloo and cornwell as well as 50s craftsman

The colour for snap on red according to tech help at the Canadian Snap on 800 number is PPG 73504. I am currently having this colour mixed as we speak so if it looks any different I'll post a reply.

Here is a on-line website that I have found to be very inexpensive when purchasing paint. They sell by the quart and the gallon, and colors can be had in a few different types, such as lacquer, enamel, or base coat clear coat. Not all colors are available in all types. Call them and give them the PPG part number, and they can tell you what is available and the cost. Also a good source of paint for your auto restoration projects.

oh ya snap on says it is a 1965 box hell Im only 3 years older

Just as a warning, the ppg number I stated above may have some problems. As I said, it is direct from Snap on tech help. I had a quart mixed up from my local auto body shop supplier. Took it home, dabbed a bit on one of the drawers and it wasn't exactly the same colour. So, I went back and the paint guy there agreed. This is for sure the number from SO and the tool box definitely is SO so I'm not 100% sure what's happening. Maybe fading of the paint but I doubt it. Soooooooooo, it you want to get the proper paint, take a drawer and match it to the samples they have. Once I did this the colour was perfect.

Do you think that Snap-On may have had different colors over the years? I have noticed that the older Snap-On stuff seems to have a decidedly "orangish" look to them, verses the current color schemes but could this just be fading of the paint? What do you think guys?

I used some rubbing compound on a snap-on box to see the true color and the paint came off on the rag. It did look alot more orange as compared to the newer models.

Red is bad (if not the worst) at fading with time. Sunllight and the elements are not kind to the color.

Here is a story (a great read with pic's) about the 69 Charger in the garage purchased from the original owner, 50% of the paint is original factory Charger "Red", but has turned orange with the red pigment in the paint fading away with time:

Snap-On told me today that the Ditzler code for their red is 73504 - same as posted above in the pic. Just a note that this is a universal Ditzler code and not a specific PPG code (though you can get PPG paints to match any ditzler code - obviously).

I was calling about my KR1000A roller cabinet in case thats important to anyone. Maybe they changed color codes over time and for different models. I don't know.

I just got a KRA 59A myself. 9 drawer. Picked it up from the original owner, a German mechanic, who bought it in the late 60's or early 70's.

Besides some of the paint, the drawers are in excellent condition as is the sheet metal in general.

I'm looking for a good quality service cart to put it. The Blue Point one's I've seen all have the edge around them which makes it difficult to get to the lock or lift the housing.

Any suggestions on a good quality cart, preferably made in USA? Thanks! Vinko.

Hose clamps can be used to remove the drawers. Unscrew them , flatten them out, stick in the slides and pull out.SO guy showed me alomg time ago.
