Snap-On Tool Box Score

Acquired this Snap-On tool box recently. It is dirty (grease) but in overall solid shape.

At this point, I am trying to decide if I am going to keep it or try to sell it. Any thoughts about the value?

If I keep the box, it will get some paint to keep the rust away for the time being. I don't have time for a "deluxe" restoration.

It appears to be a 1970s vintage but I need to do more research.

Glad u like it..whats it worth? To me nothing..im sure there are people who would buy it esp cause ots snap on. But id rather have a modern box with ball bearing slides

In that condition I'd say the most it would bring would be $200 on a really good day. If you need the storage, use it yourself but it isn't going to make you wealthy.

Don't be discouraged by our responses. While it is a very sturdy, well made box, the fact is that it is also very old and very worn. A lot of potential buyers will be put off by the "patina" it has. If you got it for free and need a box I'd go ahead and use it. If you got it for free and don't need it, it's all profit to you, right? I wouldn't waste too much time cleaning it up as you will never get near what your time and effort are worth as far as resale.

I agree on the price range. Value on these things (as with most things) is subjective. I wanted it but don't really need it -- story of my life.

If it does not sell locally then I will need to figure out a way to drag it around to the basement workshop... when the snow has melted but the ground is not mush.

Me, discouraged... nah. I waste more money on powerball than this thing cost.

I think the second part is the key. It is not complete or desirable enough for the deluxe treatment. It is functional storage and deserves a good cleaning but not much else.

Don't want to disrespect the SO fans but I have been thinking about a black rattle can paint job (neatly done).

Greasing the rails should really help it out. I did this to my then-new $300 Craftsman box when I bought it 20 years ago and it helped a lot - the thick grease makes the slides smoother and it feels like a higher-quality box than it is.

Very early 70's KRA378. Check the back it is stamped. What did you pay for it? Giving it a crappy repaint will actually reduce value. It looks pretty rough, maybe $125 +/- depending on how it works and what it looks like in person. You can get a key cut on ebay for $7/set shipped. $275 is borderline laughable IMHO.

When I first joined GJ I was grabbing stuff like this all the time. As I learned more, they got sold off or traded, and replaced with NEW cheapie Husky 40" black top/bottoms. The Huskys are definitely weak sauce for #-per-drawer, but they are only light weight storage. And they are clean, and no rust, and no ******** trying to open or close. (I have Lista/Vidmar stuff for my heavy line tools).

So....lube slides and if they work great and you can use storage...keep it. If not, sell it with no further headache.

That's one of the nicer old ones I've seen. It has the bottom two drawers and most have an open bin. Its been a while but I believe that drawer sticking out slightly is spring loaded to work the lock mechanism. Push it in and it locks the drawers and the key holds them locked.
