you cannot necessarily fill your $5000 order today on ebay at 50% off, but if you chill out and be patient, in 3 months on ebay you most certainly can!

I recently made a list of ~$10,000 in Snap-On items I wanted to buy, and was able to fill it at 50% off or more discount for new items, all from ebay, took about 7 months, but keep in mind I was doing other things at the same time, so could have put it together sooner!

newly introduced, very popular items are the toughest to get at 50% or better off, but very doable, just be patient!

Let us also remember that ebay is not an official authorized sales channel and as such those purchases are not covered under the Snap on warranty... :eyecrazy:

Why the hell would a franchisee want to pay his bill and wait on Random Joe to pay his bill, a little at a time, while hoping he doesn't skip out and stiff him on the bill? I'm sure they get a kickback on financing through Corporate (at 20-29%), but again, hope they don't skip on the bill and require collection action.

For the same reason a car dealer/box store/etc would rather you buy on time. To make more money.

There becomes a point where looking for a good deal takes more time, than it is worth. I still look though, but as I accumulate more tools it becomes harder to find deals on things that I do not have. I still look though. I do enjoy finding a good deal.

or just buy it on ebay for 50% off, brand new, all day long!

I also disagree. Many new SO tools on Ebay are even higher then MSRP!!

Yes, you can occasionally get lucky but it's not an "all day long" occurance.

If you have the luxury of time, you can get some deals but it's not like "waltzing" over to Ebay and quickly filling your shopping list with half price tools.

I used to watch the ebay auctions from my phone. I sniped many auctions and won. It seems everyone is either doing that or many times the price goes for higher than what I could do right off the truck, plus shipping.

I also have used craigslist, but I often find used items that are over-priced.

I'm just amazed at all the internet experts around who "know" the markups, financing deals / rates and how a SO franchise functions.....Maybe I've been living, and buying SO tools, in some other world, 'cause most of my experience is in direct contradiction to many of those claims.....or is there just a lot of assuming going?

I only post about my experiences, as I assume others do. I do know that the mark up for most hard tools is more than most people think and that the mark up on electronic tools and some specialty tools is not as much as people think. I do not think it would be fair to disclose all the prices. I do know that the guy has to make a living too. He also has to cover all the credit that he give out on the truck. A big part of job is managing the money, which if not done properly can get you cut off from Snap-On as a franchisee.

No dealer in his right mind is going to give you 30% off! the margin isn't even that high on most items if he's special ordering them for you. If they're on promo or left over from, that's a different story. If you walked on my truck and expected me to order you a list of stuff that's not on promo and sell for 30% off! I'd tell you to take your $5k and go f*ck yourself as I'd be losing money.

Now, if you came on with a list of stuff you wanted a deal on, that I could cross reference with up and coming promotions, I could potentially save you that 30%, but you'd have to wait until the items you want we're on promo, meaning you wouldn't get everything at once.

Thank you for posting some reality!! :rocker: Some of these posts make me think people have no clue about how the business world works.

My driver is straight up with me,when he offers me prices that are very discounted he always explains why. It is usually a special deal for him that he gets from corporate and he passes the deal on to his customers. These are usually BOGO's or huge price cuts that are not in any weekly fliers.

No way. Nobody is selling anything snap-on for 50% that is new. No way at all.

Used stuff goes for stupid prices.

I had two sets, one new still wrapped and one new unwrapped here for 50% + shipping and no buyers. So where are you looking?

do I really need to post prices from ebay of NEW Snap-On stuff at 50% off?

or should I start with items that are 70% off and new, like this one:

www.ebay.com/itm/280680735952

and shipping is less than you pay in sales tax, by the way!

we have a lot of ostriches in here! ;)

Interesting how that store has the 6mm priced more than the 14mm.

I did get a nice BOGO deal on these from my driver. It does take time to piece together deals to make a set, but that is a good deal at that price. Hopefully someone who needs it here, will pick it up. They are handy for those tight spots. They can be nice for those times you don't want to take the time to take something apart to get to that hard to reach bolt.

I will say it depends a lot on what your rep is good with snap on for better pricing. And as well what ties you have with your dealer how long have you been using him and how much you have bought before.

And if you are a first time customer coming with cash I think the 10 percent is generous since he does not know you.

And yeah they have mark up not markup vary between what you are buying

And eBay as stated is not a good comparison for pricing since it's always cheaper and warranty can be invalid when approached to dealers at times

Yeah....lets buy all our socket sets piece by piece....

Well I guess if your whole life revolves around sniping single socket auctions on e-bay I guess you can get that 50% off retail all day long. (if thats how you want to spend all day)

Some of us use our time to earn money, then spend time with family and maybe some hobby time. If wasting your life on e-bay is your goal then you are WINNING!

I would just rather spend a few minutes on the truck each week buying tools (not on credit) a developing a relationship with a real human and someone that will be there when I need service and will extend discounted pricing whenever he can and still be able to stay in business.

The Snap On man ain't necessarily the one making more money when you use SO credit.

Yes, SO corporate is making money off financing, or they wouldn't be offering it, or at least not without a higher rate. However, if I've got cash, I'm not going to pay them that interest, so it's rather a moot point. Just like I can get better rates financing cars through a local CU, so I have never financed one through a dealer. They can want to make more off me all they want, doesn't mean they're going to. ;)

With all these examples, there's also the factor of making sales they otherwise wouldn't have made to drive offering financing, as well as simply making money from the financing itself. Which in this case doesn't apply.

Just curious, what is the mark-up for the trucks vs industrial accounts?

About 20-22 years ago I bought about a grand worth of tools through an industrial account at 40% off list. I thought the truck's mark-up was also about 40%, or is it something different?

Also remembering the Kenosha plant around 1998 and a tour I got to go through, the sets they were selling there were the same as the trucks.....

Yes, it's your story to prove. Let's start with mainstream tools like ratchets, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and std. socket sets.

I'm curious where the brand new SO 50% off MSRP "all day long" listings are???

10% for a cash buyer spending 5K?!

Do you speak with a lisp or breath through your mouth?

The Snappy guy is playing you for a fool.

Demand 25% then find a dealer in a friend or relative's area to do business with.

They really don't! It seems like this whole current generation feels like they're entitled to everything at cost and couldn't give two sh!ts about anyone turning a small profit to feed their family.

Another internet expert! :willy_nil

You should be happy with 10-15% max if your a new customer, cash or not, doesn't matter. Every one of you who expects more than 15% off, your nuts. The margin on $5k worth of list price, stock order tools is not as much as you guys think, and if you think someones going to bend over backwards for the few hundred bucks he's gonna make from that sale, sorry to break it to you, but they have bigger fish to fry.

I would give you 10% max if cash and on non-stock inventory. If something you want is on promo, that number obviously goes up.

You know while I too think 10%off website/list prices is kinda small, I wonder if said dealer is such a big mover that a $4500 one ring sale is something he can just walk away from.

Did you try to see what it would take for him to hit a 20% off? Like how big of a break can you get for say 10k cash?

Are you very specific on the box that you want?

ummmm, the markup on steel on a SO truck was 100% last time I checked, so he would be making $2500 at full price for very little work and no risk, being a cash deal, so how is that just a "few hundred bucks" - and besides, if I had a tool truck, I would jump all over "a few hundred bucks" just to place a slightly larger stock order next time, that takes no time at all - wake up!

I would explain about the paying with cash and the amount you are going to buy and try to get a better percentage off. But.....be TACTFUL about it.

If he is locked in with a percentage off and won't bargain, you could try a different dealer, but don't say: so and so would only give me "x" amount off, what can you do? Be mum about what the other dealer would give you. Just ask and be polite.

I am spending FIVE THOUSAND freaking dollars for tools and you are saying I have to kiss the tool truck guys ***? SCREW THAT! To the OP if you want to spend your time traveling to far away localities sucking up to tool truck drivers so that they will take your hard earned money, I say enjoy.

I would strongly recommend that you look at purchasing some high quality German tools, online, that you could have delivered to your door at a significant discount. Tools like Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore and others for a start.

Way off. Where do you get your info, as mine comes right out of my sales computer.

Divide that number in half and your more in line with the actual numbers.

Now see why not? If I buy a Craftsman tool on eBay i'm covered all day long. Why wouldn't I be able to turn in my SO tool for warranty? If I pay that much for tools I should be able to warranty broken tools, no questions asked at any SO retailer. I shouldn't have to have an established relationship with the driver or have to kiss his ***.

Sears is a corporate entity... the driver are not, the inventory is there to sell and warranty his/her customers, they do not have to honor a warranty if he/she does not deem you their customer, you will have to mail your tool(s) to Snap-on corporate, they issue the warranty.... not the drivers/franchise owners... Makes sense to me.

I've yet to see any of these warranty issues arise. Its not enforced, unless your a pawn shop abusing the system.

Every single dealer out there should warranty anything you give them with a smile on their face. I've never had any issues with snap-on and warranties. I didn't even question where the tools my customers brought me came from, replaced them with a smile. That's how you build a relationship and end up with loyal customers. They knew that I stood behind what I sold them/they owned with Snap-on's logo on it, and due to that, they didn't abuse it.

Have I been burned on a few random items that shouldn't have been covered, yes. There were a few instances, and I just wrote them off to keep the guys happy.

It doesn't to me, it is a piss poor retail structure. It seems to me that you want to utilize your retail outlets (the driver) to facilitate customer service. The driver warranties the tools then the corporate entity (SO) compensates the retailer. Thousands of companies operate this way including automobile dealerships.

See that was what I was expecting, especially in a little town. That's why you should try to find someone in a bigger city, or at least with a bigger market, who has more stock and would be able to entertain a one time buyer without the expectation of repeat business.

Also not to be rude but some of these internet experts are either getting bad info from GJ or providing bad info to GJ. Here recently several threads have had people repeatedly claiming 'nobody pays retail for SO' and 'everyone pays about half the retail for SO' so even if it's not true, the expectation has been set by the same group now criticizing that expectation.

I never took sides in this but the sides are clearly marked. I just wanted to point that out, aside from arguing about ebay this thread went down exactly like we all expected.

Its not really the bigger market that affects the pricing, you need to find a dealer that owns multiple franchises, as he gets an additional discount for each franchises. The guy that owns 5 franchises will be able to cut you a better deal than the single franchise owner. His margins are higher. There's the secret everyone, but don't think that the multiple franchise owner got where he is by cutting 30% off deals on stock orders.

I don't understand what the big secret is, it's really simple, if you have friends who are tool truck drivers for a living, have them over, grill out, give them some awesome micro brewed beer, and after a few, they will tell you what their cost is on tools!
