I have a Classic 78 in red, paid about $4250 for it a couple years ago. Looking to trade it in and get SEVERAL smaller cabs and carts.

thinking about KRSC31A's

in red (SAE tools) , blue (Metric) green (screwdrivers and specialty stuff like picks and pry bars) and yellow ( mud slinging tools) and add a couple BPWORKBENCH's (yeah, hard part # to remember)

does this seem a little too OCD? I think the separate boxes would make it easy to identify for whatever projects are going on.

I never realized how pricey SO stuff gets when you need a larger drawer.

I went to Sears and bought a couple Craftsman boxes to go "upward" in storage instead of having a wide footprint, but the drawers are so small they fill up too fast. My Classic 78 is currently a catch all and workbench and is storing large things like aircooled bug glass and the like.

the whole idea is to get everything in a respective drawer and place where they are NOT out in the open and just thrown in an open spot.

I think it sounds like a cool idea but you might want to do more colors that go together like black...red...blue and grey or something. It might be kind of bright like a rainbow if you choose a bunch of bright colors. either way its a cool idea and I have NEVER seen it done!

Sounds interesting, but for the money I would look at some tall lista boxes. Best use of real estate and configurable drawers could make some awesome storage with some deep drawers down low and and the heights you need up high.

is this for business ?

its just my home garage. roomy @ 42x20 but I have been painting, adding lighting slowly, and trying to brighten the space up. can't stand working in a dark and disheveled garage space. I am the kind of guy that could take 50,000 sq. ft and be working in a clusterf*cked space with an inch of elbow room if I am lucky. just trying to manage the space better. maybe going upward is the solution. then again, those cabs would give me a lot more worktop space and they don't pop open like the monster service cart/cabs do. already have one of them, a KRBCSST with 3 drawers, it currently holds a whole corvair motor in a million pieces for my VW vert project.

I have a lot of smaller boxes, mostly rollers, for grouping tools and it works well. I do have a number of the small Kennedy top boxes, and use those for: Plumbing, Electronics, Taps and dies, and only the Tap and die box is on top of anythoing. the other two get stored under a bench.

Another larger Kennedy has machine tooling, (Lathe and mill) and my biggest roller has most of the "automotive" tools. I have my old top and intermediate top setup full of metal working tools, (sheet metal hammers and snip, files, hack saws, etc) and those set on top of another 6 drawer bottom with more metal working tools. (welding, chisels etc...)

Much of my wood working tools are in two 3 drawer rollers bolted back to back that double as the stand for my 12" radial arm saw., and my welding stuff is in another 3 drawer roller that doubles as my welding bench with a 1/2" steel plate on top.

That is far from everything, but I'm sure you get the idea.

I get the gist of it... its where you aren't in more than one box to grab tools for a specific type of job.

When I first started doing bodywork, apprenticing and shop cleaning, I had a Glo-Mad SO roll cart for my R&R tools, then expanded with the SST cart that I have still, for all of my bodywork tools and consumables. I adopted the organization methods from the tech that took me under his wing. Everything we needed for a job I took out and placed on my BluePoint 2 tier cart. nothing else got in the way then.

The only thing worse than having tools strewn out everywhere, is not knowing where they go or not having a dedicated spot to store them after the day is done.

A couple of KRA2007s and 2005's should handle the job well.

My polish and blonde( does that cancel out?) fiancee came up with the idea of unbolting my BP cart and putting a floor jack in between the levels and made an impromptu engine lift for the 'vair motor before I tore it down. gonna weld the top shelf together at the corners sans hardware so it doesn't bend or tilt when used.

i dont have any boxes over 36" wide. the bigger boxes stay at work
i have 2 stacks of 33" wide boxes in the garage, with side boxes stacked on one set.
1 26" wide stack in my basement reloading room for house tools.

i prefer the smaller boxes, they are much easier to transport, easier to "configure" when i rearrange the garage.

going verticle rather than horizontal just makes more sense to me. :headscrat

What I would do is keep the rollaway and park it next to your main brench. Buy a small roller or a nice cart and put your basic tools you would do 75 to 95% of your work with. Keep the big box for the tools you need, but don't use everyday, the big stuff that don't fit in the cart. I wouldn't seprate SAE and metric tools, most things now a day is a mix. If you are a jack of all trades, then you could build the wood, metal, plumbing and electric boxes. I would not break up basic hand tools into different boxes. I'm thinking you just end up pulling up 3 or 4 carts up to do a job. Just my two cents.

yeah the more I think about it, the more I just want to build a hutch for my 78 and fill it up with much higher quality tools. Might sell the Craftsman boxes I have since they are high up in the drawer count, just too small for my liking. I don't see anything on the sears or craftsman site showing the ball bearing cabs I have. Haven't heard from my local dealer so maybe it wasn't meant to be.
