Hello all. I have a snap on kr 657/637 toolbox setup. I'd like more space without buying a new box. I've seen side cabinets made for them but don't know the model number for them. Also does anytime know of another side box/cabinet thats compatible with the box? All input is appreciated, thanks.

If the 657/637 is like the 655/650 combo, I imagine this box would work. I don't have a model # for you though.

They made a few different side boxes that would fit on that box. The most common is a KRA274, which has 3 shallow drawers and 2 shelves (including the bottom shelf). They made a few that were all drawers, but they are kinda hard to find. Sorry, I can't recall the model # off the top of my head. Maybe something like KR277, but that is a smaller one IIRC. The ones without doors do not fit well onto the KR657 bottom box, as that bottom is only 18" deep and most of the non door side boxes are 19+" deep and designed for the larger roll cabs.

As much as this pains me to say it. IMHO the HF side cabinet @~$200 new from HF is the best deal in side cabinets. Used SO side cabinets in good condition are kinda hard to find, plus IMHO the door is a PITA and they don't offer much storage. On the cheap a file cabinet or similar is about the same size and works good. Just depends on how much you care about matching. I found a few single index file drawers for $1 each at a garage sale, bolted them together and then to the side of my box. Works really good for tape on the like. However, they don't match and they don't lock. Do you have a picture of your box by chance? What version of the KR637/657 do you have?

Not to question you Lookin, but I don't think that will fit. The KR657 is the same size as the KR557 and only 18" deep. IIRC most of those non door side boxes are ~19+" deep and are designed for the deeper boxes. Isn't the KR655/650 something like 20" deep? :dunno:.

a KRA274 would probably be the easiest box to find used.

full drawer side boxes, and mid boxes (sold as single boxes) are hard to find.

I am having a ****** of a time trying to find a loose side cab for sale. Most guys I run across are using Homak or cheaper ones and even then they won't sell them separately from the combo. Barring a lucky find, I'd guess the other posters are right about buying cheaper ones new. You can always ad a Snappy if you find one.

Diesel, this is just my opinion, so take it for what little value it has.

I'm a home guy, pretty intensive, but on a rather strict budget. The HF 7 drawer side box is MUCH better than a Snap on KRA274_. Better built, 4 more drawers, ball bearing sliders, no shelf (some may like the shelves however), no door to get in the way and brand new at ~$200 it is very hard to beat. I've fondled the HF side box in the store numerous times on occasion, but just couldn't justify the $ for the limited storage it provided compared to a used 26" box.

I have or had a KRA274 that I bought pretty rough, spent a lot of time patching, fixing, straightening and painting. Intended it to be a drill press stand. When it was all said and done I felt the Snap On side box was just too flimsy for me to trust to hold my small drill press, so I got rid of it. Lots of time wasted, but a lesson well learned. If you want a box that matches and says Snap On on the front, by all means find a used KRA274 or the like. On the other hand if you are looking for a usable side cabinet and don't care about the brand or COO, pick up the HF one.

You're probably right, I'm really not familiar with the KR 657. I was assuming it was a similar depth. The 655/650 is about 20-21" deep.

I'm pretty sure the 637/657 is identical in external dimensions as your beautiful 537/557 setup. The 637/657 are just ball bearing instead of friction and the top box doesn't have the side door like the 537 has. IIRC the 637/647/657 was the successor to the 537/547/557. Something like 33" wide x 18" deep front to back.

My dad's 537/557 setup had the 274 side cabinet with the 2 shelves and 3 shallow drawers. His were dated 1978 and doesn't have the chrome drawer edges. The 274 has friction slides like the 537/557. It does work nice on the 537/557 setup.

on the older series boxes, the most popular side box was the kr 274.

i dont recall ever seeing the side box with full drawers on an older box.

the newer series boxes did have a matching full drawer side box available, i've seen a few pics of them.
one pic i remember seeing had a matching side box in cranberry for the 90th aniversary harley boxes.

I'm not sure what the model number or even date range was of the full drawer sides. I too have only seen them in pics. It looks like the KR274 but full of drawers instead of the shelf. Only pic I could find quickly. I THINK they came out in the mid to late 80's. :dunno:
