Hey guys,Im kicking around the idea of selling my snap on top and bottom box.
It's an old friend,I've owned it since the early 90's but I haven't worked in a shop for a long time.I'm trying to figure out the value to see whether I want to part with it.The bottom is a kr660 ,the top ,can't remember the number but its the match to the bottom.A little history,I bought the bottom used around 92 and the top used around 95.I know there are guys here with a lot more knowledge on this than me so let me know what you think?

That set up in my area is 3 grand all day long. The top boxes are real hard to come by anymore. If someone wanted the top I would split it up. Most guys with larger bottom boxes would put the top on theirs. I wouldn't take less than 1200 for the top of 3 for all.

Yes, craigslist, with lots of photos, dimensions and give the model number off the back; cash no trades.

I'm an hour away and interested. I don't have a ton of money, but I am sure we could come to an agreement. PM if you decide you want to sell.

The top chest is a KR690. Nov. 1991 Catalog price: $2180

The roll cab KR660: Nov. 1991 Catalog price: $2860

That combination was my first Snap on box.

Very nice setup; still in great condition, and still have it.

Thanks joel63 ,I couldn't remeber the the numbers for the top but the bottoms are burned in my head.

Yes, they are great,I just think I've reached a point in my life that it might be time to downsize a bit.

That’s a lot of money for many people to put out.
One thing you may want to concider is taking a smaller box in part trade.
There may be someone wanting to go bigger while you are looking to go smaller
Might help the sale

I passed on a setup just like this at a recent estate sale. The seller was hitting up everyone who came in the door and couldn't find a taker at $1,000. Hearing these responses, either our prices in this area are significantly different or I'm an idiot for not grabbing it. :dunno:

Bob its funny you say that,I was just given two of my dad's boxes with more to come(not passed away just getting old)and it got me thinking about my whole situation.I feel like because I don't work on cars for a living anymore,I could probably get along ok with the boxes that have been given to me.I am really on the fence on what to do,thats why I wanted to get an idea of value to see if I would even consider selling.here are some Pics of the other boxes

Definitely a regional thing. Everyone here in my area thinks their used junk is worth new retail, often more. And you see those same boxes posted and reposted....for years.

On topic, I don't have much love for the old SO boxes. I'd probably go $1000 if they were in good shape. They're still solid boxes, but they are 25 years old, without warranty, and there are great deals to be had on new ones.

That box is worth 10 times more than what you would ever get for it. You have no idea what you have and it's a shame. The new Snap-on boxes they build today are no where near as heavy duty. Your box was made out of thick gage steel back in the day. And on top of all that, your box with the matching top chest is extremely rare.

You need to evaluate several things I think.
Unless those toolboxes are partly empty you may need to think about what tools you need to keep and don’t.
Also, do you have kids? Are they into tools or do you think they will be?
May want to keep your dad’s boxes to give to them

I am no longer a professional mechanic but I still do a lot of work on stuff. I know at some point in the future I will have to pare down but I suspect it will be a nightmare to figure out what I am going to get rid of and keep

In my store, I would have about $2,200 on those boxes. And they would need to be in good condition with the drawers working well and good liners.

Its hard to sell older boxes and I doubt you can get what some are saying. The biggest issue with selling boxes is finding someone with cash to buy it.

Try CL but I think FB might be a better chance.

Don't forget the transportation issue....There's many who would love to own that box, but not many are close enough / have the ability to come pick it up unless the price is very reasonable.

I have to disagree with your points here. 25 years old doesn't mean anything. I have SO boxes from the '80s that work like new, and are built tough as nails. When you're talking toolboxes, age is usually completely irrelevant.

Why are they without warranty? You can warrant most of the parts on these boxes, most importantly the slides.

Great deals to be had on new boxes? Says who? If you think $1,000 is just a so-so deal for these boxes, you'll be very disappointed if you go to buy something new what you'll find for your money. For $1,000 you'll find very little.

25 years old can mean a lot when you need parts 25 years from now. As said by another poster, the warranty applies to the original purchaser. Sure my current guy would probably take care of a few slides, casters, etc, but what happens when he retires or I move? Priced a set of casters or slides lately? And (except for one) the drawers are only ~19" deep and 31" wide--not enough for the big tools. So they don't have much value to me.

Around here, people want $2-4k+ for a set like the OPs. When I can buy a new KRL1023 or 68" Epiq in the color I want with a full warranty and a stainless steel top for not a whole lot more than that, the decision becomes really easy. But I'd still go $1k for it, since you can never have too much tool storage.

Again, I've never had problems warranting slides and I've never bought a box new. Location always plays into used buying decisions as some places have lots of deals and others rarely do.

You change the nature of the discussion when you say up to four thousand for a setup like the OPs. Nobody in their right mind would pay 3-4 thousand for that. I see people want all sorts of outrageous sums for toolboxes. Doesn't mean much, that's why I check EBay to see what stuff sold for. The OP's setup for 1-2 K would be very reasonable, and I'll bet you a lot of people on this board would be interested in that price range.

Like I said, I'd go 1k for that combo. There's nothing wrong with it, its just not ideal for me. Its still quality stuff.

I'm jaded by used stuff, because it usually costs more than new here. Some current examples:

https://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/d/snap-on-tool-box/6334572606.html
Similar to the OPs, wants $6k. Six. Thousand. Dollars.

https://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/d/snap-on-kr1000-and-kr-1100/6334867448.html
$3500 for 1980s toolboxes

https://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/d/snap-on-krl722-tool-box/6340259676.html
Couple hundred more gets you a new one.

https://newjersey.craigslist.org/tls/d/snap-on-krl7023-orange-black/6303151795.html
Just buy a new one, they're cheaper.

Lol!

I gave up on used boxes a long time ago...since they seem to cost more than new in my area. Maybe my dealer just has great toolbox deals or people are willing to pay more for "experienced" toolboxes. :dunno:

You can get parts for them. Snap On sent me replacement rails for my dad's KR537/557 combo. These boxes were from 1978, and I got new sliders a couple years ago for the bigger bottom drawers.

Thanks for your replies guys,I like a healthy discussion to see different points of view.
3-4k would no doubt be a huge stretch,on the other hand I think a 1k is a lets throw something on the wall and see if it sticks price.
This style probably isn't for everyone because some want the newest color, feature or just something different.
As far as replacing slides, warranty or not,I can't attest because none have ever failed ,and these particular boxes have been in my home garage since 2002 not seeing everyday use,so I don't think theres much chance of the slides going bad anytime soon.

I think part of the problem is Snap On's pricing. A box that retails for ten grand will be advertised for 5-6K as if it's a deal. What people don't understand is nobody is actually paying ten grand for that box. 5-6 is the actual retail, so when sellers advertise it for that much, it's overpriced, and the more approximate worth is 3-4K.

And that's not even counting those sellers who think anything with a Snap On nameplate is worth its weight in gold.

I would say around here that set up would go for 1000.00 to 1200.00 tops.
We have two mechanic schools here in town, so there is always used boxes and tools for sale. Lots of kids change their minds after starting school.
