I just picked up this tool box at a resale store / was surprised to see it sitting there around a bunch of other good tools that were reasonably priced. Not sure of the age of it but it's condition is super nice . When I flipped the latch on it later at home I noticed the stamping under it " Stanley" and "made in USA " don't see any other markings telling me anything about it. I'm wondering what's the story with it either way for $15 don't think it will hurt if it's got mismatched parts. Pics are hard to get clear close ups but I think you can make out the Stanley logo. This might be normal just figured I'd test the waters and see what people think.

I think we're going to want to see the whole box, my guess is it might not be a Snap On but without more pictures I couldn't tell you.

Entirely possible. Stanley is probably the biggest maker of hardware in the world. It would have been easier for Snap On to source a latch from Stanley than tool up to produce a few latches for a small carry box. The handle is probably sourced from someone else. A lot of tool boxes have the same handle. It really doesn't change the quality any. Made in USA latch on a made in USA box!

I would guess that the original hasp on that box broke, and someone replaced it with a stanley hasp.

Either the latch was replaced or Snapon had Stanley make the box. Even the new lower end Snapon boxes are made in Canada by I think Williams

I have seen a number of Snap-On boxes with Stanley marked hardware, so I would guess they sourced that hardware from Stanley instead to tooling up to make their own.

Snap on sourcing from the Stanley monster.... the horror. I thought we were actually getting the same magical steel they use in the tools in the boxes.

Why ia it such a surprise at the time that box was made Stanley was probably still a respectable all American company. Even today Snap-on outsources some of there tools I have a thread restorer kit it's the same as a co workers except mine has Mac stickers and his has snap on.

Back in the day when that box was built; I doubt SnapOn would have been ashamed to use Stanley Hardware on a tool box. I still have the Stanley carpenter tools I bought back in the 60's.. Stanley Hardware items were found in local hardware stores and lumber yards. They made quality products.

Stanley still makes some of the best hardware available, as well as many other quality products. Shockingly, you get what you pay for and if you are at Wal-mart you generally get what you deserve.

I just bought an old Snap-on Tools box as well.... I just noticed I also have “Stanley Canada” stamped on the handles... I can’t find any numbers to date it....
