Snap-on top box special edition question

Saw a 10-drawer snap-on "street rod edition" top box listed at an auction.

Just wondering when these were made, and what a fair price would be...

condition was fairly well used from the pic, maybe around a 6 or 7 out of 10...assume no keys.

Thanks, don't know much about their boxes, this would be my first, although I do have a double rod locking mechanism with snap-on keys picked up at the flea market I've been waiting to do something with....this may be my excuse.

Do you have a picture or dimensions? You are going to need to search by model number. Very seldom does a "special edition" add value to a box, and in some cases actually detracts. Does it have 5 long drawers to the left of 5 short drawers with a fold down front cover? That is about the only 10 drawer top box I can think of (KR637).

yes, 5 long on left, 5 short on right. no part nunmber listed. it's red with chrome on top/front of the side frame, and a wide chrome plate across the bottom front of the lid that say Snap-on on the left and Street Rod on the right. the more I look at the picture, I think the street rod may just be something someone stuck on there. the script is not the same as Snap-On and size/font is different.

I am thinking it is just a regular 10 drawer box with some stickers stuck on it...I'm thinking $200?

I have a street rod box. It was my dads, not sure when he got it. the only thing I don't like is the shallow drawers. The bottom also has the street rods on the bottom drawer. This is the only pic I find.

IIRC those came out at the same time as the muscle car boxes they were offered in 24 and 30 inch deep, the 300 inch deep are much less common KRL1022/1201

Well I should hope so, that would be a royal ***** to get to something in the back of a drawer

Those "special editions" tend to really date the box and in my eyes make it less desirable. I mean does anybody really want a 1994 30th anniversary Ford Mustang box?

thanks, kinda what I was thinking on that emblem...their fee's are better if you pay cash, but gotta always factor that in...but then you pick the item up on the way home from work so you save on shipping from some website or epay, so it works out sometimes...others not so much...

You got a point, I wouldn't want anything with the Ferd logo on it,
But I can say that we've got our eyes on the lookout for a nice shape GM Musclecar KRL...

To me its not so much "Less desirable", IMHO its you are more targeting a specific customer, specific customers are fewer and far between so prices react accordingly...what I like and you like may be 2 different things. I'd rather work out of old grease soaked cardboard boxes then a Ford decaled EPIQ. I'd GLADLY take a JD Green KRL, etc...
Even forgetting about the True Special editions, same applies to certain colors...Some guys want nothing to do with an Extreme Green box, others would pay extra for it.

wrong side of the state, but looks like a good deal. what era is that, early 80's? 70's? I've got a snap-on name plate exactly like that I stole off the tool box in small engines class in high school, probably around '84 or so...

This ones been on my local CL for a while now. Its unique and "nice" but most certainly not my cup of tea.

Ugh, that teal color! Local CL has a similar box in that color, been on there for months with no takers. I remember when those colors like teal and salmon were a fad with street rods, never liked them then, always knew it was gonna end badly.

That is exactly what I thought it was. The box is a KR637. They are nice, heavy top boxes. 33" wide x 18" deep.

That is actually a different box, a KR537, the predecessor to the posted 637. Your buddy's setup is a good deal for someone that needs a box setup though.

im sure he would do better than 400 too, he wants it gone. first time ive ever seen one with the middle

Man, I'm really tempted. i'm probably 150 miles from Detroit, so 300 miles round trip at 16mpg = around $50 in gas...for $300, i'd probably make the drive...

Edited: just checked it actually 86...man, it's hot! (No, I'm not joking.)

I think the Snap-on special edition boxes do limit the number of buyers to a large extent. I had my 57' Chevy BelAir set for sale for close to a couple of years before finding a local buyer. I had some potential out-of-state buyers but once they found out the cost to ship those heavy boxes the interest always dissipated.

Once I did find a local buyer the deal happened quick as the buyer had been looking for a BelAir set for a long time. I had owned the boxes since they came out in 1997 so the boxes were hard to part with. However, I had sold off all by Tri-five Chevys and had been simplifying in order to retire. Also, its was nice to have my tools in cheaper boxes without having to be so careful not to nick the BelAir boxes.

I kind of agree with you on that one. That being said, I bought a 90th Anniversary Harley-Davidson Snap-On top and bottom box a few years ago and used a heat gun to CAREFULLY remove the panels, figuring if I sell the box and someone wants it to be a Harley box again, then no prob. I put a couple nice bolts in the pin holes where the panels used to hang and the thing looks great.

The seller used the box as a way to display items in his motorcycle shop, so it never got used as a toolbox. It was full of dead bugs and the drawer slides were all dried out, but other than that, it was nice and minty. It took a couple of weeks to clean and lube everything, order a few parts (dried out slide bumpers) and ended up getting a hell of a nice box for not a lot of money (it was a 15 hour roundtrip drive through the snow to get it, though).

I don't see a lot of added value with the limited edition panels, but meh. Someone else might someday.
