Snap-On torque wrench issue?

I received my first ever Snap-On Torque wrench so I am not familiar with this style at all. It is a qtr-2100d model 15-100 ft lbs. When I dial the wrench to a certain setting them bring it back down to 15 ft lbs for storage there is a thick brown grease left on the shaft covering the setting number. Please see picture. Is this normal or is something broken? Doesn't seem like it should be doing this. I couldn't find an answer on a google search and Snap-On's customer service is backed up a few days. Thanks in advance.

If your doing anything critical I wouldn't trust it without being recalibrated, looks to be an older wrench.
Any torque wrench should be serviced regularly regardless.

If you received it via eBay or similar, I'd return it. Never seen any torque wrench do that, let alone a Snap-on. Not worth taking the chance to me...

It looks like the person you got it from left it outside in the rain, or got it wet and stored it that way. If possible I'd return it. I wouldn't trust it for any type of critical work.

I'm gonna say rust. Doesn't look like any grease I've ever seen. At least from that one picture. I'm also guessing that's why someone sold it.

That torque wrench has Snap-On’s old logo script and is likely decades old. Someone probably shot WD-40 or something else like it down in the adjustment mechanism to free it up and now it’s seeping out. I would highly recommend sending it out for calibration before trusting it.

I buy old ones and broken ones to fix and restore all the time. I think I have about 80 Snapon torque wrenches right now. I'd take the wrench apart and clean and check the internals and recalibrate it if needed.

Those old Snap On torque instruments are exceptional quality and as good or better than anything you can buy today provided they are checked and calibrated. I love the roll stamped numbers over the modern laser etching that is hard to read and wears off.

I take them apart and clean and inspect everything. I replace broken or worn parts and then check the calibration and calibrate it if needed. Most of my torque wrenches are +/- 1% and all of them are +/- 2% from 20% to 100% of the range.

I returned the torque wrench but the original owner is looking to get it rebuilt and recalibrated. Would he be able to send his into you if I passed along your contact info? He's in Tennessee

Snapon will do it for a reasonable price. I don't have all the parts they do. I can fix some wrenches but not all of them.
