Snap on Torque Wrench Problem?

I have a snap on Torque wrench a tqfr250e and I noticed that after I cleaned the handle with simple green and used it a few weeks later, that the black and white numbers had a place the peeled off and looked really dull, like maybe some of the simple green on the handle and unit maybe leaked under the plastic screen and caused the paint to peel on the numbers, do you think that would be a warranty item? You can still read it, but some places it would be harder to quickly set the pounds as you would have to look very carefully, just curious. Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to try a warranty claim if the torque wrench is less than a year old. The worse they could do is say no and mutter something about the owner's manual saying not to immerse in fluids. what do you have to lose in trying.

Actually I think it was a citrus cleaner.... I didn't soak it, but sprayed the handle a little, and I think it leaked onto the gear with the display... It looks like I can get the part for 15, but would it have to be recalibrated and also how do you install as it looks like it comes out of the bottom, when you replace it, since the opening isn't big enough that you are looking through even with the grip off... I will see what they will do I bought it used, it still works and looks new, just a little harder to read but it is only around 160-195 so not sure how much of a problem it will be. Just hard to get the 5 ound increments.

Merkava, bleach, even diluted is not so great, correct?

I wouldn't use it. Bleach will quickly corrode certain metals...

I love citrus fruits and grow them in my yard, but would never use citrus based cleaners for tools because it is corrosive.

Let me tell you guys a little story:

One day I decided I was going to clean my old A/C compressor; the one I took off the car to be replaced. I left the plastic caps in place; the ones that close off the intake and outlet ports.

I lathered it up real good with Fast Orange or one of those orange citrus hand cleaners. I rinsed it off thor-oughly with water and let it dry.

The next day, I went and pulled the plastic caps off; there was pitting of the aluminum under the caps!!! Apparently, the rinse water didn't rinse the cleaner from under the caps!!! Apparently, I was unaware of the cleaner getting under the caps in the first place!!!

Lessened learned: If you have to use one of those cleaners, make sure you get it rinsed off from everywhere.

Damit I should have put the torque wrench in water to rinse it off, hahaha. Acutally the problem was when it got stuff and smudges on it, I then took the handle apart and wiped it off the indicator wheel and that was when some of the paint came off. Also why did they go away from stamped numbers to painted? Trying to be cheaper, but serious maybe I will order the part and when I get it calibrated down the road, I will have it swapped out... Not a biggie as you can still read it, it just looks more of an eye soar which bothers me a lot with my tools!!!! I might need to see if I can get some drugs to help with that problem....

Are you sure the damage wasn't already there?

Seems kinda weird if Simple Green and Citrus are to be feared and the "safe" cleaner is brakekleen.

I'm 100% positive. The ports were very smooth before I decided to clean the compressor for storage. I somehow got the idea I could rebuild the compressor myself and make it a ready-to-go replacement.

The citrus cleaners like Goo Gone are worth having though to clean your hands and nonmetals to remove tar, grease, paint etc. They are much more potent than soap. Just make sure to wash it off you hands thoroughly.

I use Goo Gone all the time to take price tags and marking off of used tools and I've never had a problem. I don't soak them though, I just put some on a rag and clean only the spot that is sticky/marked. Then I make sure it is dry before putting it away.
