Guys through my student discount I can get a killer deal on a Snap on Torque Wrench til the end of the month. I want a 1/2 model, but I cannot seem to figure out the difference between:

QD3R250A & QD3250

The website is not very clear.

Please help

The first one is a "fixed" ratchet head. QD3R250A. The second is just a "fixed" head and does not ratchet. The pictures on that site aren't helpful at all.

I'm sure you want the ratchet type.

They're the same except for the head on the end. The QD3250 has a fixed NON-ratcheting head. The QD3R250A has a ratcheting head.

Really appreciate the help. A non ratcheting head seems pointless...

1) It is probably cheaper
2) It may fit into SOME tighter places (though the fact that you lose the ability to ratchet, means you need more overall space in general).

Yeah, I'd always recommend the ratcheting unless you had a reason to go otherwise.

With my discount 10 dollars cheaper I'll definitely go for the ratcheting head

I know the one you have there is cheaper but I would suggest looking at the TQFR250E, the flex head its much easier on lug nuts which, I'm sure you will be doing a lot of soon, if your still in school now. Plus the dial to change the torque setting is much easier than the handle, maybe not as precise but much easier. And it's only about $60 more.

That wrench has another HUGE advantage. Since it is not a micrometer wrench, you never have to dial it back down to zero after each use.

If you're going to spend the money get the flex head. If you ever plan on doing motor work with the engine in place those are the only kind that will work without issue.

The split beam you are referring to may be cheaper to buy from Tooltopia than thru Snap-on with the discount. Need to investigate that before buying the split beam. Tooltopia has the Precision Instruments branded version PREC3FR250F (they are the manufacturer) for $129.98 with free shipping and no tax (unless you are in the same state as they are).

Snap On TQFR250E is $359 on the web site. Even if you get 50% off, you are still better off going with the Tooltopia one.

I bought a 1/4 inch torque wrench with my student discount when I was in school. I hadn't heard of precision until a week ago. My wrench half off or so cost about what theirs does now. Mine is still worth what I paid for it so I don't care but if I had known better I wouldn't of bought it from snap on.

The TQFR250E is $193 through the SEP discount. For about $60 more you can get a tech angle. Then you get way over the original price but it makes sense if its affordable. I bought my 3/8 tech angle for $270 with tax and shipping.

Second the Tech angle, one and done. The new one does not have issues like the old ones and they are awesome. I also vote for a green one.

As of now I refuse to touch a flex head ratchet. Makes me want to castrate myself that is my thought on flex head ratchets. I am not a student at a school for automotive repair I go for engineering. I can get the torque wrench at 65% off so it's approximately 139 dollars. I will go with the snap on.

I would like to get into engine repair though can someone explain the flex head advantage there please.

Basically the only help would be if you are torquing an engine still in the vehicle and need the flex for a better angle.

The flex head torque wrenches only swivel about 15 degrees or so.

Yes. The TQFR250 doesn't move anything like a flex ratchet. It moves just enough to give your fingers clearance when you need it.

For my purposes (not using it professionally) I suggest the TQFR250 over the Techangle. Neither has a great warranty and I'm not comfortable putting so much money into an electronic gizmo of such limited utility.

I ordered my torque wrench in Thursday. Some day I would like to get one of the electronic ones but that was not the case as of right now. The tool was on a special promotion for the month and I got it for 136 plus tax
