Snap on torque wrench question

Hey all I’ve got a used snap on QD 31600 fixed head 1/2 inch 320–1,600 in-lb torque wrench that a friend gave me a few years ago, he got it though a military whole sale package that came with a lot of tools, said he didn’t really need or use this and i was in need at the time. Anyway I’ve used it from time to time but with it being a fixed head it’s really hard to use it on-vehicle applications easpecually in tight spots so i would really like to sale it to help fund a ratchet head 3/8 ft/lb model.

I’ve got a proto 1/2 50-250 torque wrench that i got a for a steal off of the local classifieds from a retired mechanic which i love so i wouldn’t mind getting another proto in a smaller 3/8’s size

Problem is i really don’t know what the value of this snap on is as there web sight only shows the same model with a ratchet head and doesn’t list my model, the ratchet model is $403.00 obviously I’m not expecting to get anything close to that mine is in nice shape but it doesn’t have a box and it was previously scribed by the shop that owned it.

What would you guys ask for it? Thanks

The scale in inch pounds in 1/2 drive is odd, but not uncommon. Same with the non ratcheting head. I cant say on value, but there are a lot of NOS torque wrenches floating around fairly reasonably priced (especially on ebay), so it may be a hard sell unless someone is looking for those specific features.

I've bought one torque wrench used, it was calibrated & sold by Team torque back in '09. I wouldnt buy another used one myself unless it's been calibration checked or I can get it cheap enough to send it in myself. Just my opinion.

Your picture #4, is that where the serial number used to be.. and was subsequently ground off?

Serial # on the tool is in the pictures on the Handel is where it was scribed for the owning unit he said they de-scribe them once they aren’t accounting for them anymore.

I guess with the low value I’ll just keep it and it will ride in the box most of the time or become a truck box tool for if i need to do a tire change or something on the side of the road, i was hoping it would be worth more with the snap on name but i understand why it’s not with it’s limits. It’s a good wrench just limited in use since most of the time I’m torqing things on a vehicle so space constraints are tight and a lot of times it’s a bit long to get any real swing going

Since this topic is about a torque wrench what do you guys think would be a good choice I’m happy with my bigger proto 50-250ft but I’d like a ratcheting 3/8 to cover lower ranges i see they have plenty of 10-80ft lbs but i have also seen cdi mentioned a few times on here and don’t know to much about them, so if you were going to chose one which would you go with? I’d love to buy a snap-on but just can’t afford it and honestly I’m not building motors or usually doing something that would require 100% accuracy just as long as it’s built to last and is reliable then I’ll be happy. I always set my wrenches to the lowest setting and they never get dropped or abused and always stored in the case (proto came with one)

Nothing wrong with CDI, they are owned by Snap-on and the only difference between the Snap-on's and the CDI's is the ratcheting head.

Precision instruments also has good quality wrenches, their split beam wrenches are quite popular and are also rebranded by Snap-on (and use a Snap-on ratchet head).

There are many NOS Napa & Armstrong torque wrenches on ebay, Cripe distributing has quite a few.

A range of 5-75 foot pounds is a good range for a 3/8, 10 to 100 is also common. Keep in mind the best accuracy is from 20% to 100% of the available range of the wrench.

Unless you spend the money on a truck brand torque wrench, most you will find are around 36 tooth or thereabouts. Most of the time it doesnt make a difference, but it is nice to have finer tooth count as an option.

I have both CDI and Proto torque wrenches and I definitely like the Proto wrenches better. The CDI have laser-engraved markings that I find hard to read. The Protos have deeply stamped markings that are easier to read and a more convenient locking mechanism. The one advantage of the CDI out of the box is that the knurling is more comfortable in the hand. However, the sharp knurls on the Protos will undoubtedly smooth out over time.
