I do not work professionally for a living but as a hobby. I have started picking things up from here and decided to find my local snap-on truck. I have noticed on here that some of you guys have talked about trading tools in toward other tools on the trucks. How does this process work? Thanks in advance

Tools normally "traded-in" are given an "established and agreed upon value" by both you and/or the driver, and then that $$$ amount is applied to either your purchase or to your account if you have one with the driver.

Keep in mind that in many cases, the value of a used tool traded in if often or at last is usually less than if sold outright to co-workers or professional techs in person often making it somewhat a push-pull situation. Drivers are well aware of tool values including other truck brands and big-box tools.

If you have a long standing account with a or any driver they may offer you more, but as mr. Shaun and Chad have pointed out and I have seen first hand for years, the used tools they buy often resell quick due to price but they also do make some level of profit when taking in the trade.

It's not a "free money in my pocket " transaction. :)

way out west somewhere
What happens on my local truck is say you buy a tool barely use it for whatever reason and some other tool you really need or want shows up. I just ask him what will he give me for trade in and if he will add it to the new purchase. Usually if its not beat to hell he gives fairly decent prices...

Depends on the dealer. Its mostly lile trading in a car. They need to give you a price that they can make money on selling the tool again. You want as much as you can. They dont just trade in any tools you have. They only take it if they know they can move it for a profit. They sell tools and thats how they make their living, so they only do it if its worth their time. That means they dont give you top dollar.

Ok, so it sounds like my assumption was pretty close. If I trade in a say a s80a that has never been used just sat in my box I should expect around 50% less than what I paid snap on for? Just want to know what to expect due to never dealing with a truck guy before, Ive always bought from here or snappy website.

It all depends on the dealer. My guy buys and sells his trades for the same price as long as you trade them on a purchase. This is also for more common tools. My dealer would probably give $100 maybe a little more onn a good condition S80a if you are buying something else with the money.

So I have been trying to get in touch with one of the snap-on guys in my area and I can never seem to get a call back, email etc. I know from the guys on here that they are pretty busy people. Should I just stick to the website or try and find another guy. I have 2 states all within 15 minutes of my place.(WV, OH, KY) I don't care to drive a bit to meet the truck if that is what I need to do. Suggestions

Go to a local auto repair shop and ask them when the Snap-on man comes by and then just meet him at the shop when he comes by.

That was the first thing I tried. I stopped at 3 different shops to ask about the truck and all 3 responses were " he stops by when he can and never on a schedule". Thats when I tried the websites find rep way and no call back.

Unless you know for sure when one stops by somewhere, then you're better off sticking with online. The truck guy won't give you a discount, and may be hesitant to offer you any credit. If you aren't a professional mechanic, then it really is easier just to go direct IMO.

My main reason for finding a truck was because I like to handle tools before I buy them. Even more so when the tool is priced as snap-on is (Not that they aren't worth it). I buy with cash only, so I wasn't worried about credit offer. I have heard about some guys getting a few bucks here and there off but that was not my concern.

Yes finding a shop that he stops by regularly is the best way. Sometimes late in the day he may not make it just due to when the shop closes. Thats the route i went after the website yielded nothing. Finding a driver is a good way to get deals. I'm not a high dollar customer by no means but he usually see's me every week or two and will normally buy something, since i'm going out of my way to meet him.
