hello guys, for some time ive been looking into getting a scope or graphing meter for diagnostics at work. my budget isn't huge so I cannot get any really expensive equipment. I was looking at getting an old vantage a that might be all I need for now. im looking to buy some other equipment such as adaptors for a scope as well so I cannot spend a lot of money and be stuck wih no adaptors. would you recommend i even bother with the vantage o should i look for a vantage pro? or does anybody know of any other brands. one of my teachers recommended a fluke type, but i know that wont have the wiring pin outs like the snap on would have

I heard that they are coming out with a new vantage soon, you might be able to get a vantage pro at a deal.

Vantage Ultra is out, someone posted about it on iATN, looks to be built off the Modis Ultra platform without the scan tool part, no price that I have heard yet. Touch screen 2 channels.

FYI The Vantage is not a scope just a graphing Multimeter , the Pro is a true 2 channel scope, I would get the Pro.

The Fluke ones are not the greatest for what we do with a scope, small screen low capture rate etc. I know techs that use them but I know lots of techs that pull a vantage pro out over Pico or DVOMs.

How is it not a true scope? Sweep time is 50 micro secs.

Because the people that made it said it is not a scope, it has to do with Sample rate, not your time base, basically how fast it can see a signal, time base-sweep time is just the time on the screen.

A very good tool but you will be better getting a pro or ultra

What is a good price on a gently used vantage pro? I found one locally and I am tempted to get it.

1k and under depending on what comes with it, and how updated it is, for instance if it comes with a snap on low amp probe the price is closer to the 1k if it comes with only the leads and is has not been updated since new closer to 500.

vantage pro will give you vehicle specific information and best locations to test. if you are new to using a scope like I am it is pretty nice to have that support. I paid 1495 on the snap on truck for mine with 2 batteries and the test leads .. no low amp probe. 12.4 software. there is a software update out but im at an independent shop and we don't really see brand new cars so im lagging on the update. the new vantage ultra is $2795 from what I remember. ive seen vantage pro on ebay for about a grand for similar setups to what I got on the truck.

I was referring to the original Vantage it is a GMM, the Ultra is a Scope, my statement still holds true, the time base on the Ultra has no bearing on its sample rate, sample rate is how fast the tool can process the signal, sweep or time base is just the tool basically zooming in or out on the signal, overly simplified way to look at your time base.

Do you know what is the same rate for the Vantage ultra? Because I figire 50 microsecond was the sample rate fastest.

Pico goes down to 100 Nano/seconds per division for sweep/ time . Sample rate is how fast the tool can read the signals it receives , sweep is not the same as sample rate, sweep is just how much time is on the screen not how fast the tool can read the signal. For example lets take a signal and to make the math easy happens in 500 milliseconds if your sweep rate is set at 5 seconds per division you will not see the signal without changing the sweep to 500 m/s per division. The glitch is still there you just can't see it because the signal is to fast on the screen, but if the signal happens too fast for the signal to be picked up by the scope, that is were sample rate is important, so if the glitch happens outside of the range of the scope to see it, it will never show on the screen, no matter how fast you set sweep. Keep in mind that the snap on scopes are plenty fast for automotive work and in some cases the buffer on snap on is better than the pico, the buffer is how the system records the signal.

A Scope reads Voltage over time, the time part is the sweep. Sample rate is how fast the tool can see the signal so the faster the better for scopes but in Automotive we do not need a super fast Scope. Pico comes from other industries that is why it has a faster sample rate

Vantage Ultra/ Verus Pro have a 6 Mega/Samples per seconds in a single channel the more channels you use the slower the same rate.

The Pico is 80 Mega/ Samples per Seconds in 1 or 2 channels in use, 20 MS/s with 3 or 4 channels in use over kill for auto repair, but an awesome scope
