Re: Snap On VS Blue Point (latter lower quality)

After looking at the snapon site a bit (which has Blue Point on it as well) the Blue Point do appear to be of lower quality. 2 locking casters instead of 4, lower load capactiy. Blue Point also also does not always have it net weight listed, but when I saw it it appeared to be lighter than snapon equivalent cart or box.

Was told by my dealer that some of the BP socket/ratchet sets are from their Williams brand, and the pullers are made by a company out I believe NY. Exclusively for snap on and Williams. I was on their site when I got their name on my new puller package, but cant remember it. Every thing that SO lists in their catalog for pullers, separators, and sets come from this company with the same part numbers, although you can't by from them.

I was reading this post because I wanted to know myself. I have part of your answer.

In the 1920s, Snap on sold sockets, but the buyers and the salesmen wanted a full line. “Blue Point” dates from about 1922 or 1923 and is a Trademark of Snap on. They used it for wrenches and pliers. There were at least 5 manufactures making tools for Snap on with the “Blue Point” name in the 1920s and 1930s. Milwaukee Tool and Forge (MTF) and Forged Steel Products (Vacuum Grip) were 2 of them. One of these OEMs labeled wrenches “Blue Points” with an S.

In the 1950 they bought some of their suppliers and the OEX line of wrenches was rebadged “Snap on”. There are other examples of tools that started out as “Blue Point” and ended up “Snap on” too. I guess they bought these companies or brought the design in house.

In the 1960s “Blue Point” seems to also cover a bunch of specialty tools. So through the 1960s the trade name “Blue Point” was used to bring in outside tool makers to fill gaps in the product line. Also of head rebuilding tools, some pullers, and specialty tools in particular.

In the 1970s-today – I don’t know. I have a lot of Snap on and older “Blue Point”. I also bought a newer ¼ ratchet set to put with a piece of equipment (a knock around set) – I don’t like it. The ratchet is built loose and it has a cheap feel to it. The modern “Blue Point” stuff does not seem as good as the modern Snap on stuff.

So does “Blue Point” mean non-US built? – don’t know

does “Blue Point” mean non-Snap on factory built? – don’t know

does “Blue Point” mean the quality is lower? I don’t know of any “Blue Point” tool
where there is a “Snap On” tool that is not better. The opposite is true – If there is a Snap on and a “Blue Point” – the Snap on is always equal or better.

It seems to be a half way house for tools. They spend time there and if things work out – they may become Snap on. If not, they disappears or stay Blue Point.

From what i seen blue point is cheaper, made else ware, no warranty, and under spec of the standerd snap on tools

First post and it's false information.

Blue point is tools that snap on sells but doesn't make. Many are made in the US, just by manufacturers other than snap on. They do have a warranty, the same as snap on tools.

Bluepoints were wrenches and snapon was sockets and ratchets. Now snapon is the premium tool line produced by snapon in the USA excepts for the rebaged stuff. Snapon does not makd any of the bluepoint stuff now. Its all contracted out and can be made anywhere, typically china. Tools made under the bluepoing name have to meet pretty high quality standards. So basically you can get chinas best for about half the price of Americas best, with quality not too far apart on somethings.

I guess everything SO or BP I have must be kinda old cause all of it is sttill made USA!

...just go on Snap On's site and look at say for instance Blue point breaker bar...made in Taiwan. So what you have must be really old cause this has been the norm for some time

Blue point line of tools thru snap on have always been to my knowledge not from snap on origin but branded and made by some other company and not always import/us made just like the Toyota cam seal tool made by schley just rebranded blue point or fuel line disconnect set made by lisle

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this subject. Just saw a youtube that said they are made overseas and Snap On just sells them. I know they are good tools and carry the same warranty as Snap On but just hard to find agreement on who belongs to what.
