I have been buying Snap On tools on Ebay and through their website for years. I am a hobbyist and do it yourselfer. I work on my vintage Volkswagens and these old cars require some tuff tools. Well I was on to something when not buying american cars I should have stuck with not buying American tools. Here is what I found out today. Snap On business motto is as follows. They will warranty a tool for the original owner only. This is how they make money. Let me explain. They sell a tool for an inflated premium, this tool will hopefully not break or break more than once before an original owner dies or sells a tool therefore money is made because the new owner is no longer considered a customer to Snap On. Or better yet if you have a truck distributor he will buy them back from you at a low ball price when you retire and realize how much you have spent on a product that you cannot resell. Please people be aware this company is dishonest. STAY THE HECK AWAY.

My experience with SnapON warranty issues has been nothing but positive. I have relocated, had drivers quit, etc and never had an issue exchanging anything. After retirement I have dealt with customer service and still really positive. gave a part number and what's wrong to the phone rep and new tool in the mail within a week. never even had to send in photo or broken tool. They just asked that I distroy the old one.

All positive results here with me as well!
Been through a couple truck guys and currently without one now.
Called Customer service and had no issues.
I did have to return one of my broken tools and they sent a return postage label.
ALL GOOD

Why do you think that a company that you have NO business relationship with (In other words, you did not purchase anything from them) has a warranty obligation to you?

To answer the comments here what happened is the rep sent me packing. No warranty no positive experience this is the truth. I save the email correspondence.

Hello Andrew

Thank you for contacting Snap-on Tools. If you have a Snap-on Franchisee, they will be the best resource to provide you warranty service.

If you are a personal tool user or hobbyist, we have a dedicated team to assist you with any purchases or warranty needs. Please provide the information requested below so we can start the warranty or repair process.

· From where were the Tools purchased:

· Full Name

· Email Address

· Part Number(s) and Quantity (if you cannot locate the part number, please send a picture)

· Serial Number (If applicable)

· Street Address

· City, State/Province, Zip/Postal code

· Phone Number

RESPONSE

My personal info and
I am a hobbyist do not have a Truck person.

RESPONSE

Thank you for the information! Regarding the email below, when you say the tools were purchased online, could you please confirm if they were purchased from www.snapon.com or from a different website? Thank you!

Thank you,
Mary Pat
Snap-on Tools Customer Care

RESPONSE

These particular tools were purchased through trusted ebay sellers, with good seller ratings.

RESPONSE

Warranty on Snap-on Tools is for the original purchaser of the tool. For example, if you were to purchase product from a Snap-on franchisee or online at www.snapon.com. Our warranty does not cover tools purchased on e-bay or at garage sales.

Thank you,
Sara

RESPONSE

Then why am I paying the high prices even on Ebay. Is it ok to quote you on this on Yelp. If I new this nonsense I would be buying german they are better at a better price, even at ebay price. Please don't bother apologizing I will be helping your terrible policy as well as visiting all my favorite tool websites ie. Garage journal ect. And spilling the beans about how harbor freight has a better warranty. I will never buy a snap on tool again.

''Irate I know''

RESPONSE

I am sorry about the issue you are experienced with the tools on E-bay. We are not able to determine the prices on E-bay the warranty from E-bay would be from their site and the person selling the tools. If you have any other questions or need anything else please let us know.

RESPONSE

I told you not to apologize I am the one who is sorry for buying your brand of tools.

RESPONSE

Nothing!!!!!

So as you see this is what transpired, as well as why they should warranty that is ones own personal opinion, you can walk in to any harbor freight or sears and they will warranty no receipt and no questions asked no relationship needed. Forgive me for thinking that a tool I am paying so much for could not be matched with as good of a warranty as Craftsman and Pittsburgh. Cheers.

Your favorite forum, that you post on so often haha.

C'mon man, don't be mad at snappy -- you specifically told them you bought them used on eBay. Just hit up another agent if it bothers you that much, or pretty much any truck. You're apparently trying to take your discounted, used tools and getting new -- did you guess telling them as much might not work out so well?

Again.. Why do you expect them to warranty a tool you did not buy from them?

You are not, "Warrented" by a company you did not transact with.

You bought tools from a third party, not from Snap-on.

First of all I have been a lurker here for years and dont post because you guys cover everything so well on your own. I really have nothing to offer as a tool aficionado, I am not one. I feel like you people here are on the same wave length as the rep I spoke with so I will not respond further. Cheers and hope I have helped someone save some cash and a headache.s

Never had a problem with a snap on warranty. But all of there stuff does not have a lifetime warranty. They warrantied some wrenches my dad gave me that were 50 years old for chrome peeling.

I don't understand. Exactly what were you expecting the rep to say after you told them you were sorry for buying Snap On tools? They already explained that their warranty only applies to the original purchaser and directed you to said warranty terms on their website. The rep was professional in all correspondence with you and told you clearly they would not warranty tools purchased from anyone other than the Snap On site or a dealer. What else is there to say?

Everyone knows you can’t expect warranty from eBay sourced snap on tools.

Why not? That spiel from SO is a load of ****.

Personally I've never heard of the original purchaser caveat in their warranty. Now that I have, I may think twice about future SO purchases even though I have access to SO franchisees and have had 0 issues with warranty. Just knowing they are trying to screw the DIYer who invests in their overpriced wares is enough to make me as irate as the OP.

How can you continue to miss the point that the warranty is part of the sales contract and YOU DID NOT CONTRACT WITH SNAP-ON with the used or third party tool purchases?

Their basic warranty statement clearly says original purchaser only and not transferable.

Cut from a previous thread in 2010 -

Listed a Snap-on tool set on ebay recently....
still had 5 days left til end of auction...
i get an email today that my listing was removed because
snap-on says i violated copyright laws...

"The rights owner or an agent authorized to act on behalf of the rights owner, Snap-On Incorporated (US), notified eBay that this listing violates intellectual property rights. When eBay receives a report of this type of violation, we remove the listing to comply with the law."

never had this happen before...
more to come as i look into this....
i gotta call ********...

anybody else run into this issue before?

Did you mention anything about warranty? Ive heard they take them down for stuff like that. Although "intellectual property rights" sounds like BS to me

yup, i mentioned the warranty...that must be the reason it was pulled..

You're not an "authorized distribution channel" therefore Snap On claims you cannot represent their warranty.

The only warranty Ebay sellers should ever represent is their own. (not the manufacturers)

The only listing I've ever had removed was a Snap-On listing that mentioned the warranty.

that's my question too...
but i'm guessing since you are buying the tool second hand, you are not the original owner and you didn't buy it from a "truck" or snap-on dot com....
so the warranty does not apply...

It does **** buying tools from the secondary market thinking they will be covered and they aren't. Of course a lot of guys have had no issues because they know a cool dealer or work in a shop and built a relationship buying from a dealer.
. I'm just a tool hobbyist / diyer and had both good and bad experiences with dealers, even the same ones. One was like a warranty anything type, even impacted looking sockets, another once he knew me usually took care of me. I bought little new from these guys. Then again I never walk on with a pile of tools or something. One or two pieces once in a blue moon
I had an industrial dealer at school who was half a jerk. He warranted a few pieces for me. I brought him a Snap On plier with broken tip, the logo was faint, he said Snap On never made this model (they were old needle nose) and I showed him the markings but he insisted he wanted to show his district manager. He or they kept them for i think several months until it got to the point i asked about them and he again tells me they aren't Snap On. I said will you bring them back then and he brings them back one day and they had rubbed the name clean off! Any you guys who know the old pliers know the ones I mean. I didn't really care,I bought them used, but still.

That same dealer, I ordered a 17 dollar tool from him and he never placed my order. Apparently it wasn't a big enough purchase for him.

As far as phone service, i called once, prior to my GJ days. Told the man I have two ratchets in need of repair/rebuilding. His first questions were how did you come to own these?Did you get them from a flea market or similar? I thought wow this guy must know me,lol. I'm honest l, and not feeling entitled to anything I told him I purchased them used. I then proceeded to buy to rebuild kits as clearly that's where things had come to.

So I shake my head every time someone from the forum says just call SO or ** company and they will send you a new one free. FREE!!! LOL.

I'm not some hater though. I love having and using Snap On tools. It's no secret I buy most of my tools used, but they are the best in many categories. I'm writing about these experiences because it interests me, and most guys who make their living off these tools aren't going to take the time to talk about silly little stuff like a plier warranty.

Fully understand their policy since so many people buy used tools to trade them in for shiny new tools.
I had a warranty issue, got the same questions asked. Simply responded "Bought from my route guy well over 30 years ago. (Gave his name) No, I no longer work in the field nor do I live in that town, but I still use my tools at home. I now work in an office building on a University campus. No tool trucks on campus nor do I have receipts from 30+ years ago."

OK, replacements are on the way. It was two sockets that shattered.
I also asked about the chrome peeling off my ratchet. SO said yes. Chased down a truck one day, he said no. Contacted SO and they said send it in. Got my replacement a week later.

I've only bought two SO items off ebay. One was a 10mm combo wrench. It showed up and looked like someone contacted both terminals of a battery with it. I sent it back and got a refund. Hint: Never buy anything off eBay with an out of focus pic.
Second was the hard to find white and red ratcheting screwdriver with the vintage SO logo. It's in like new condition.

I have always worked at shops with tool trucks. Bought half my name brand stuff used online. The truck guys warranty it, no questions asked.

Yet another GJ topic about the extreme lengths some people here will go to to try to get something for free.

I'm amazed that one would have no moral issue with buying used tools on ebay and then attempting to get them replaced for free with brand new tools from SO. This same persons moral compass somehow held strong with being honest in regards to how he purchased these tools in the first place. Does trading used tools that were bought for pennies on the dollar and then attempting to get them replaced for free my snap on fall into some grey zone of being dishonest as opposed to just flat out lying about how they were acquired?

Whatever happened to the guy that was dead set on warrantying his 25 year old tool box that had faded paint

There's a distinct difference between buying a well used but fully functional tool and trying to get it warranted versus buying the same used tool and attempting to get it warranted after it fails.

Lifetime means lifetime. Original purchaser fine print is BS. Especially at such a premium price point. You do realize that many truck guys will accept their tools back as trade in and then sell them used. You think they sell them to the second hand user with no warranty?
