I'm looking to buy a few "pre-owned" snap-on hand tools. What % of new prices (as in, current website prices) would you expect to pay for:

(1) Items that are still in package and unused?

(2) Lightly used items out of package but in very good condition?

I was shocked to see one of the items on my want list go on ebay for 80% of the new web price. Wow, for another $10 why not just buy it new? :headscrat But maybe that's normal for aftermarket Snap-on?

I normally get things off of ebay for 30-50%. I won't buy it unless it is less than 50. If it goes above I don't get it, there are a lot of things I don't get, but I have come across steals as well.

Anything new, people look to get what you said, 80% at least, kinda *****, but oh well.

id say 50% off is a great deal. and higher in price then 50% depends on how bad you need it or if you can wait for a sweeter deal, that is typically the way i justify investing in snap on.

I try for a max of 50% also, but I usually can beat that. Got a new S80 for 55.00 shipped.

New in package 50%-60%

Very lightly used 50% or less

Used but in good shape 30-50% depending on how popular the item.

Older discontinued items but still popular and serviceable (ie:830 ratchet) 30-40%

It also depends on the items. Mainstream tools like ratchets, sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers always seem to hold a higher percentage then other stuff.

For my pricing & buying, I figure 50-70% for new depending on the item, and 30-50% for used. 50% for used better be only used enough that you can tell it is not brand new. 40% often for that level of quality too. 30% to 40% for excellent shape plus an owner mark, or for some chrome wear, or scratches, etc. Still good usable tool but not pretty is 20% and below that I don't bother.

There is so much snap op stuff going on ebay each day you can always find a great deal. Here is one I missed (was trapped at the inlaws for dinner)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0531916841&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT

(that's near a grand worth of wrenches there!)

Know what you want and set your price threshold. Save your search and when you see what you want either bid to your max or if your like me wait and snipe it!

The most I've paid percentagewise was $65 for my looks new 3/8 80 tooth ratchet. More the 50% of the truck price and I start seriously thinking about buying it off the truck (goodwill from my truck guy, and I wait until I actually need the tool).

Most of my Snapon has been less than 25% of new truck price, but I don't buy new in the box at all.

It kind of depends on of who else wants it and how bad, or who is looking at the time.

I saw a set of used 3/8 metric SO semi deep go for $130 on a Sunday with about 10 bids.

A couple of days later I saw the same set get picked up for $85 with only one bid in the last few seconds of the auction, and the set was in better condition.

I paid close to 60% of the listed price buying brand new from Snap On with my student. so for me, buying used tools at 50% doesn't make sense.

40% is the top I would consider.

most of what i pick up used is at least 50% off list. depending on what brand.
about the only thing i wont buy (new or used) anymore is anything that says MAC on it.

just my personal dislike for the last 3 MAC dealers ive had.

and yes i do have quite a few MAC tools, i'm not looking to get any more.

really depends on the item. If its something popular or rare enough they can go for good cash. 60-80% of list doesnt surprise me in the least.

Depends. If it is a popular tool like a ratchet or socket set or screwdriver set, then you have tons bidding and 60 percent might be good. I'm talking new items here. If you really need it, then anything under truck is good.

If it is a odd ball item like a new low amp probe or a dial indicator then 50 percent or maybe less on a good score.

I only buy new on ebay because the descriptions of the used tools are never reliable. It's just not worth it to me to get burned on used stuff.

If used then 30-50 percent unless it has initials then 0 percent.

You might find that these ebay sellers are offering worldwide shipping.

Snap on prices here in Australia are nearly 200% of US prices. And.. our dollar has gone up.
80% of US price is still less than half Oz prices.

Note to Ebay sellers: offer worldwide shipping.

you just have to look and spend a lot of time looking on ebay and watching items or just spend a lot of money on the truck.
I am cheap and don't really care for S/O. They are to shiny for me, scratches bother me. I am silly that way. I do love there ratchets though and have purchased a few on e bay be careful and ask questions ( owner marks or any other marks other than factory) people do not disclose that a lot of the times. my neighbor bought a set of something S/O I mean the set man for 500 something. they were all initialed and not disclosed:wtf:

SO TRUE! So many sellers act like "Why would anybody care if there are initials on them?" And yet they're very, very careful to place the item just so, and get the shadows just right, so you can't see the engravings in the photo. I had one guy cuss me out because I complained about non-disclosed deep etching names on a tool. "What the $&% do you care? It's a tool, ain't it? Don't it still work? What the *%$^ is your problem if it got someone else's name on it? It's a #*@* tool!"

And you just KNOW those same bastards have a completely different line when they're buying tools..."What this junk? It's got someone's name on it. It's worthless."

So here's the two tool rules:

Rule 1: If you're selling, owner's marks and engravings are of no concern whatsoever, not even worth disclosing.

Rule 2: If you're buying, owner's marks and engravings are the primary reason to negotiate for a dramatically lower price, or for not buying at all.

Not sure what the answer is but I know that mobile tool dealers buy new tools for between 30-40% off list. If you have an old tool that is damaged you can get a new one for free under wrranty so the resell value on old tools must be high.

Plenty of Ebay sellers don't seem to realize that the tool is worth less when purchased from them than from the dealer or Snap-On direct, simply for reasons of convenience, risk, and warranty. Shoot, they don't even seem to realize that shipping costs reduce the sell price of the tool...

They also don't seem to realize older models or well used tools are not worth as much as current versions.

If I really want it, 50%. I'm weird though. If I find out the guy is making a killing on it, I'd rather pay more and buy off the truck. Something about obscene profits bother me.

I also have a weird rule of thumb: no more than $5 for hand socket. $10 for a wrench. Unless it's a speciality tool.

I've also bought two sets of sockets that were so f*cked up that I had to exchange most of them. (Snappy not happy with that one), but in those cases I was pretty lucky because I got the sets for about $30-$35 shipped, but even then I thought given how messed up they were, that was too much.
