Hello all-

Several months ago I acquired a tool chest with a lot of tools in it. Some tools were good and some not so good. I’m those tools were two snap on wrenches, I believe they are used for brake lines. They were the same as the had the same part #. Each wrench has a 1/4 inch opening on one end. Well one of the wrenches has a true 1/4 inch opening and the other wrench an opening that is stamped 1/4 inch, however, it’s not 1/4 inch. I measured it and it’s 5/16 9f an inch. Clearly it’s an error, and I suspect it’s very uncommon. This isn’t a bash thread, just a discussion. Have any of you stumbled across something similar?

Looks like a bendix brake wrench. Is it ground to a larger size?

Could it be whitworth? Anytime I find a stamping that’s counterintuitive. . .

A 5/16" head across flats on a 1/4" screw? Whitworth screw heads run bigger than US sizes and we're used to seeing a 7/16" head on a 1/4" screw.

Typically, US companies stamp a W on a Whitworth tool after the size, such as 1/4 W.

It doesn’t appear to be ground to a larger size. There is no physical marks to indicate that.

I'm going with ground to a larger size, maybe ground and polished. Look at how curved the bottom of oversized wrench's opening is. This isn't the standard rounded opening which is only deep enough to clear the point between the flats on a hex head.

If it was ground open, it was done with an excellent attention to detail.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
It's a bendix brake wrench. Willys and Studebaker, late 50's thru mid 60's ish, 3/16 and 1/4 (and marked that way). THe other one was wallered out to 5/16 (see the rounded end of the cutout) and the other side was ground to make an adjuster "spoon" for a star wheel adjuster.

Someone's brake tools.
