Snap ring. I used Channelock 927. Do I need bigger?

These CV boot snap rings are about 1" ID. The smallest snap ring plier did not work. The CL 927 (8") barely worked. It spread the ring apart but not enough to remove the snap ring easily. It also kept slipping off. I had to get a friend to wedge a screwdriver while the rig was expanded. I thought this was a small sized snap ring at 1". Is there a technique I need to learn about? Or do I need to buy the larger 10" version? 929 just for a 1" ring?

You might get by with leaving the tips out as far as can be retained to get just a little more spread.

There are a lot of snap-rings smaller than that in valvebodies and shift mechanisms.

If you do the job again (or on other vehicles in the future,) invest in larger versions. Or one-piece pliers with adequate spread.
