Snap Ring Pliers discussion

I cannot stand convertible snap-ring pliers, nor those with inter-changeable joints for internal/external use.

Sadly, I've had the best luck with cheaper snap-ring pliers and was just reminded reading this thread that I have several pairs of Snap-Ons that need to be returned. For what the S-Os cost, I can buy an awful lot of cheap ones that for me work better.

Snap-rings can be dangerous when they go flying, and I don't like having to try to find them on the shop floor.

The reviews on the Craftsman Professional Retaining Ring Pliers are only average.

Is there play in the Craftsman Professional Retaining Ring Pliers?
How are the interchangeable tips? Do they wear out easy?

Did you read them? They are all 4 or 5 star out of 5 stars except for one reviewer who gave them a 1 star because the grips came off (same review on 2 of the pliers, weird...). Personally I've never experienced that, I did see that review prior to buying and tried to pry the grips off mine with no luck, they are on there solid. Don't buy based on that review, without that it is a 4.5+ star product.

My personal favorites are the Mac set with interchangeable tips. I think I paid $35 off the truck, and have never had a problem at all.

pipsters, thanks for your input on the snap ring pliers. I did read the Cman reviews and yes there was one person who had issues with the grips on the Cman snap ring pliers. But there were bad reviews of the Channellock versions of these same snap ring pliers.

Back to part of the OPs question - how do you ue these regular snap ring pliers with rings wiu no holes on the end, just beveled ends?

I had been using a pick to lift and pliers to pull off...

That's why you need the special pliers! Regular ones won't work.

I've also seen that style referred to as 'lock ring pliers,' presumably to differentiate them from the snap rings with the holes in them.

in this case stay away from Snap-On I have broken more snap ring tips then i can remember mostly all from single uses. I don't even bother to get them replaced anymore, it hurts me to say that.

Get them replaced, sell on eBay, use $$$ to buy Knipex. Sorted.

I have a Craftsman plier that is made for expanding external snap rings that do not have holes. It has flat duck billed like tips with knurling on the outer faces. Will look for a part number on it the next time I'm in the shop.

only difference between those and mine is the color of the tray and the price (i paid $50). They seem like a nice basic set. Converting them from squeeze/expand could prove to be a pain but not as much of a pain as changing the pins in the channel lock ones I've been using!

I wish someone made a stronger version of the KD screw driver type snap ring tool. While having never used, it looks like a handy tool, but reviews seem poor at best?

i've been using this Channellock unit for quite a while and haven't had any issues with it. Around 20.00$ at Canadian Tire/Home depot/Princess Auto.
