I'm not sure what kind of snap ring this would be called.

This is for a CV joint bearing support bracket.

That doesn't have holes in it. But is there special pliers that would work with this type of snap ring? Can someone recommend a set of specialty pliers that would work with this type of snap ring? I know I could try just normal pliers and fight with it, but if a special pliers exist for this type of snap ring, might as well as get them, if it makes my life easier.

Please and thanks.

Guessing here.

Look at the teeth in the second pic here. They are for expanding the ring, you need to the shrink the ring, so teeth on the inside. Don’t know the name.

Interesting so the teeth on those pliers wouldn't work to collapse it, only to expand it?

I think "Big Tool" is in cahoots with the automotive industry to invent new fasteners that require we constantly buy more and more different tools.

"Oh, they have dozens of snap ring pliers already? Let's make something that will work with NONE of those!"

You just use regular pliers to squeeze the ears together on that.

The pliers posted are for expanding what are known around here as "transmission rings". Basically snap-rings with no ears or holes for pliers. The teeth are on the outside of the jaws.

That said, there are some similar to the ring posted that need to be expanded and those pliers would work for that.

Internal snap ring pliers, because you’re compressing it to take it out. Or convertible snap ring pliers. Just not external, as those only expand a ring wider to remove it off or something. The tip size will matter. Any decent set and you should have all the options.

I use a pair of Channellocs for those. You set the pliers to have the jaws as nearly parallel as possible when on the "ears" of the ring.

A pair of Bernard's with parallel jaws and the groove cut down the center would work well, too.

You need something like this with flat tips. They call them "Lock Ring" pliers. Lisle 44900.jpeg

That's for an external ring that's on a shaft. The OPs picture is an internal ring that's in a bore. So, a duckbill, needlenose, twingrip.... plier will work on the OPs situation.
