I like the ball retention if I can find them; most of the ones out there are all ring retention. The pin lock type is nice if you have a socket and extension you want connected to each other forever. :D

matco uses ball type impact extension.

the ring jams a socket on it and the socket comes off killing the ring. then you need to pick the ring off. I remember it happened the second time I used the bosses IR titanium.

teh rings crack too, but the ball types pop the ball out, its a catch 22

When they're working as they should, I prefer the snap ring. My boss has some kind of off-brand impact universal adapter, which uses the ball, and I've yet to successfully use it without shooting the socket across the shop.

The Snap-on impact universal adapters use the "square ball" that you gotta poke to get the socket off. Makes much more sense to me.
