You're looking at a screenshot from the Knipex catalog. Have any of you guys had the snap ring get distorted like shown in the picture at the far right?

Yes. Was i using the right size pliers? Dont remember.
They dont do it very much if almost not at all.
They work very well.
The knipex pliers with the "piano?" wire inserts fit very tight.
Was sick of using the channel lock POS so bought the 8 piece set.
Whatever you do dont buy the channel locks!!

I bought a Craftsman pair today and they're doing the exact same thing as shown in the picture to the far right. I'm wondering if I need to get pliers with bigger tips to fit tight. The snap ring holes are .078'' and the plier tips are .074''

These here. Craftsman 47412.

Those are the same as the channel lock ones i said not to buy lol!
The tips are also parallel from what i remember.the knipex ones are bent in or out depending on internal or external circlips. Those ones do both with the same.tips so they cant be bent in or out

They will do that if the tip don't fit right. A specific application that comes to mind is the axle shaft retainer on Ford super duty trucks. That was the job that sold me on the knipex snap ring set.

I've got a 3pc Matco set similar to the ones pictured, Lang is the OEM, IIRC. I have not really had any issues that I remember with them. The largest set has bigger size tips & will go to 3.5-4"

Yes, I've had that happen. Sometimes when it starts distorting like that the snap ring will fly off. Tests your reflexes when they come flying at your face lol

Interesting subject. I've had the distortion happen before. Makes perfect sense that it is caused by incorrectly fitting tips. But honestly speaking, it has never caused a real problem getting the things on or off before. Off is usually never an issue once you expand them, and getting back on as long as they work well enough to get it started a simple push downwards with your finger will finish seating it. Granted I don't encounter them every day, just time to time on farm equipment.

I prefer this style when you have the room

I have this set as well work great on really large rings. But I hardly ever get equipment with rings that big. Usually for everyday in field I just use the Channelock ones. I think I am about done with channelock though. The grips on both my side cutters are always sliding around. If I ever have to replace it will be knipex all the way.

I went with the Imperial IR-90 which are the biggest pliers in that kit. They are 5 million times better than the Craftsman pair I got yesterday. The tips are sized at 090'' and they fit 7/8 and 1 inch external snap-rings perfectly. I have discovered that for the best control, you want the largest diameter tips that will fit in the snap ring.
