Thanks for posting that link. I was looking for that. Do you know if there is a site so the industrial catalog can be browsed through more easily? Like snapon.com with indexes, etc.

If a 72-tooth gear wheel requires 5 degrees of arc to catch the next tooth, then a 80-tooth wheel should need 4.5 degrees.
How is 4.5 degrees "25% less" than 5 degrees?

what you can't see from the drawing is that the pawl's wedge between the ratchet body and gear under pressure........i don't see how it could slip!

That's the key to the design's strength, I think. The low ratcheting torque required comes from that a v-shaped leaf-spring-like shim of metal separates the reverse lever from the pawls, pushing the currently loaded pawl against the the ratchet head.
By the way, I've been trying for week to get the 1/2" from my dealer. It's in the 1000 catalog, but I guess SO doesn't have enough of them in the wild yet. I think they felt they needed to finish the catalog before many of their products were available.

I've already had the T72 1/4" for a couple of months. I like it and it seems comparable to the dual 80 3/8" ones. According to my Snap-On industrial guy (the one who originally gave me the industrial catalog link) the 1/2" ones are still 4 - 6 weeks from general release.
I thought that is how most ratchets work. I'm going to open my other ratchets and see how they work.
I'm not sure which ratchets you have, but I've opened up a bunch of ratchets (no snappys though) and the dual 80 looks very different. Most just have a pawl that has a couple of teeth, which fit into a couple of teeth on the main gear. They rely very heavily on a tight fit between the two. I think that is why the C-man raised panel ratchet fail so much. The fit and finish isn't very good anymore.
I've seen several fine tooth ratchets that look similar except that they only use one pawl that grips the teeth on one end of the pawl for forward and the teeth on the other end for reverse. The old school Proto's have two little "levers" that essentially function as two pawls but they are a much more crude and clunky design (very strong though). These sorta bind between the gear and ratchet body as well, which makes them really strong. I'm going by my not so good memor on this stuff so be nice.
