I have been given a tool box with a key. First of all, I would like to replace the lock itself as I'm not too sure who else has keys. Second, I want an extra key because I lose things like keys. I really don't want to destroy the box because I lost the key.

What I have is in the picture. If I need to take the hook off the back of the lock, that's fine.

The number on the key & lock is Y168.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Chris

A Snap On Dealer should be able to help you out. I

A Snap On Dealer should be able to help you out. I buy my keys from my dealer. I have about 5 extra keys for my Snap On tool Box's. I have the same lock/key for all 3 Snap On box's. When I want to open my tool box I take out the one key and open each box. It's easier to have one key for the Three locks than to have a key for each lock.

Take lock assembly and key to a Locksmith and ask for it to be rekeyed with 2 new keys. Explain you have concern the present key has unauthorized copies. Chances are he can rearrange the tumblers, cut new keys, and have you out the door in a few minutes.

I'll be trying the locksmith option later today. LDVUSA is apparently not interested in helping at all. It's cool though, I had a similar experience with snapon in the past.
The little guy doesn't matter, at all. Regardless, I'll be posting what happens.
Thanks for all the help.

What box does it go to? If it is an older box, I have a few lock cylinders if you want to swap them let me know. What did LDVUSA actually say to you? You can buy entire modern lock assembly w/ keys for ~$30 from snap on.

I had my old one out and a new one in less than 30 minutes. Biggest PITA was taking all the drawers out to get some working room around the interior. $25 from my Snap On dealer got me two keys and a new cylinder lock.

When I got my box used I called snap on, told them, gave them the model #, and they shipped me out a pair of matching locks. When I got my side cab I called them back up, gave them my key #, and they sold me another pair. They were always very helpful.

I will try to hunt down a SO dealer.
I got no response at all, no phone call, no return email no NOTHING from LDV.

This is the similar response I received from SO years ago when it came to replace a wrench that snapped off. The guy on the truck wouldn't even stop for me.

I'm just wondering if a hasp and padlock would be the simpler and easier solution. Cut out the tool companies that couldn't care less about dealing with the little guy.

Can't you fit a lock from something else? Combination lock maybe so you won't even have to worry about lost keys.

I've seen many boxes with combination locks. Nice way to never need keys and have the same code for all your boxes.
