Got this SHL80 as a warranty replacement for an old 36 tooth with peeling chrome yesterday.First time I've felt the 80 tooth action, feels nice and smooth but not very confidence inspiring torque wise, time will tell.

I own several Dual 80's, and theyve been nothing but strong as hell. I cant believe some of the stuff Ive broken loose with my 3/8" drive just because I didnt want to make the trek back to my toolbox.

I've never been a fan of the soft comfort grip handles so the first thing I did was strip the handle off and convert it to hard handle.Happened to have a yellow one that was unoccupied(thanks to kwhitelaw),so that became the donor.A little drilling and a trip to the chopsaw and now,to me atleast,it is a lot better.Hasn't had a socket on it yet, probably Monday.

I'm assuming the drilling was for the handle and then the trip to the chop saw was to shorten the steel shank of the ratchet. :shocking:

You've got it.Probably makes you ill thinking of a brand new snappy ratchet that's never had a socket on it getting cut in a chopsaw but to me they're tools and if they're not what I want I'll make it what I want.Probably kill you to see me drilling holes in my Snappy box when I brought it to the shop so I could mount a side cabinet and a hook for hanging my harness and hard had.The apprentice nearly sh*t himself when he saw me drilling into my box.:lol_hitti

I own a few soft handles and a few normal (is there a proper name?) ones. Why not just go with normal ones?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say TruckTech is referring to the steel contoured handle; what I refer to as the "integral" handle. :D

When I bought the one that got traded in for warranty I wanted a hard handle version but it was just discontinued.I grabbed the soft handle because it was on sale, figured I'd try it.Used it for a bit but never really liked it.When I traded it in for warranty I decided I'd turn it into what I wanted to start with. It's not like I'm short of 15" snap on regular handles,I have two more including one new never used 36 tooth version, along with a flexhead 15"snappy and a 15"proto big dawg. Why not make it what I've been wanting for a long time.Tried buying one off Ebay but the prices are retarded and this way I have a Dual 80 version.

Makes sense. Personally, I dont like the hard handled ones. I dont own one, but guys in my shop do, and the shape just feels akward to me when you hold it.

Hope you dont have to try and warranty that. :lol_hitti

Really not an issue while I can't see them giving me a hassle replacing the kit for a handle change but it really doesn't make any difference since if I break it our contract says the company will replace it.I could always stick the original handle on it if it goes back for peeling chrome. Not a big deal.

Caper, outstanding job on the handle, you now have the best traits of all ratchets ever made (in my opinion). Did you ever get a hold of beerman?

great idea... I don't mind chopping up anything to make how I want it...I am going to copy your idea myself.. I remember when I was about 18 I bought a beautiful 1956 Chevy with perfect red/white two toned paint, I hated it.. I stripped the nice paint to put the car in bare ppg 9700 blck basecoat. The old timers gave me hell....But I bought the damn thing and liked it way more looking mean than looking like I was going to get the groceries............ Anyhow great idea....
