Snapon tool cabinet

I just bought a snap on classic 96 tool cabinet. The cabinet is locked but I did not get the key.The lock uses a round key. I am at a locksmith who trying to pick the lock. Which direction does the key turn to unlock? The locksmith thinks it turns ccw to unlock. The snapon website is down so I can not contact them. Thanks.Bill

The lock is locked at the 3 o'clock postion. It is unlocked counter clockwise at the 12 o'clock postion. Hope that helps.

It would be cheaper to drill it out then install another lock, unless the Locksmith is under 1-2 drill bits and $20.00 lock?

Thank you. There is a code/lock # on the face of the lock. I hope snapon can give me a key. The locksmith is not doing very well. He has been working for over an hour. Again thanks.

Do the classic series boxes have the key number laser engraved in the face of the lock like the KRL boxes? If so why not just buy a key from Snap-On?

Edit: You beat me to it. Yes, Snap-On will sell you a key, I ordered spare ones for my KRL by just referencing the lock number.

A key from Snap On is like $12. No drama. I bought an extra one for my Classic 96 because the guy I bought it from could only find one key.

Find yourself a locksmith who has a circle pick. They're not that expensive and any LS worth a damn should have one in his kit. Picked up 4 SO boxes at a military DRMO yard a few years ago for the shop at work and one only had a key. The other three turned over in about 10 minutes with the circle pick.

It's not a circle pick, it's an ace pick. A good one isn't really cheap. I picked open a krl a few months back. The challenge is the weight of the rod assembly when picking the cylinder to open.
I used my hpc ace pick. I also had another brand (can't remember) and it didn't work so I switched to the hpc and got it open. If he's still working after 1 hour with no luck he should quit and save his time.

Which model box is it? If it is light enough you can flip it on it's top to unlock it. Once it's flipped you can remove the drawers and take the old lock out. Sometime they will unlock if you just lay them on their back.

Just buy the whole new lock assembly from Snap-on. Part number K1LA, about 23 bucks shipped. Or buy your key for 7.

Your kidding? Anyone can order a key from SO just by referencing a number stamped on the outside of the lock!! How secure is that!!

Sorry I dropped the thread, I was moving this beast. Metaletr-I can't flip it. It is a KRA2418PBOSS.(73").MoToys is correct about the weight of the linkage causing problems.He never got it open. He had two sets of the picks,but he never got it open. He would not accept a fee.I spoke to the SO truck guy. He is getting new keys on Monday. When it rains it pours. This box came up out the blue. I just bought three 59" Vidmars in an online auction 2 weeks ago

Even though the locksmith didn't get it open, you went to a good place since he didn't still try to charge you. I have heard horror stories of fly by night "locksmiths" who charge after they destroy something trying to open or ''fix'' it.
Ordering the key is probably the cheapest and simplest option. Sometimes when I'm too busy I suggest that to customers. (most standard file cabinets work the same way with a code stamped on the face of the lock.)
