Alright guys my Snap On driver has been tempting me lately on selling me a new box. Now a little back story/ explanation before I go any further. I have a Craftsman 26" 3 piece combo that is overfilled, along with a Popular Mechanics top that is cram packed sitting on a roller cabinet I found that is also jam packed, here is a link to some pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/65002935@N03/5918511150/
. I am considering the Snappy for one good reason, warranty. I am considering new for the only reason that I might stand a good deal on a new box as I would buying used. I have the extra income that I can pay for the box. I also don't want to hear from the naysayers that you can buy XXXX for XXXX, or wait for used, or there is no way in He!! I would pay that for a box. Now that I have that out of the way I would like to hear from you guys on your opinions on these boxes. First the KRL722 http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...group_ID=18215&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog , I know it isn't as deep but does it make that much of a difference? My next two choices are KRL1022 http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...group_ID=17806&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog and KRL7022 http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...group_ID=17802&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog . What are the pro's/ cons to these boxes? If it helps I plan on getting a top box later on and I'm not getting rid of my old combo as I plan to use it for some of my other specialty tools. Thanks in advance.

"it's your money, do with it what you want", but If it were me I would use the money and get a Kobal stainless steel from Lowes for 1600 buxs. With the savings, you could treat yourself to some other tools. I know around me, craigslist is flooded with used and slightly used tool boxes from mechanics that have lost their job or have changed jobs. They are only asking .20 cents on the dollar for them.

There is significant size difference between the KRL722, 7022, and 1022. In terms of dollars per cubic inch they are pretty similar; the larger boxes are proportionally more expensive. Check out the square inches of drawer surface and cubic inches of storage volume for all 3 boxes at www.snapon.com and you will see the difference. The depth does make a huge difference, it's an extra 5" per drawer! I have a KRL722 with a top, here is a link if you want an idea of how much it holds.

Ive had / have them all - the only down side of any of them is the price:bounce:

The only issue I had was with the smaller depth on the 722 some of the longer items didnt fit front-to-back in the drawers and kind made odd arangement of tools in those spots.

I'd recommend holding out for the best deal you can to actually buy the box. Every time I bought, I traded up - got a good trade in deal and waited 'till the dealer brought the price down where I felt good about it....

for me, the only issues I've had with the KRL722 have been the shallow drawers and the casters (brakes aren't the greatest). other than that, it's built like a tank and the drawer arrangement is good for my application. Well, I did kind of outgrow it and am now in the process of upgrading to a ****** box but if it weren't for that, I'd keep the one I have. If you don't have a lot of tools that are longer than 21 inches that you want to store front to back, then I'd say the 722 is a good choice. Also, if memory serves me correctly, there were recently a lot of really good mark downs on the 722's through the dealers.

the KRL 1022 and 7022 are great boxes as well and they both have the deeper drawers and nicer casters. but, like anything bigger box means bigger hole in your bank account!

...there's plenty a room left in those boxes!!! lol

You guys can actually write these boxes off your taxes can't you? There is some savings there, right? If the guy is tempting you, he WANTS to sell you a box and I'll bet you can get him down. I read a post on another site from an actual truck guy and he claimed when he is "motivated" to sell a box, he has gone as low as 50%. Not sure how true it is but...it sounds believable. Tell him the ONLY way you could do it is if he sold to you at...oh...i dunno...one of those $7000 boxes for like $4000. otherwise you'll have to make due with the ones you have for a while longer...cry about the baby needing a new pair a shoes, rent, your girl's new bolt-on *****....Tell him he has a sale whenever he is ready....screw it, what have you got to lose? Judging by those photos, you could get a sears deal at zero interest on their best box, save thousands and still be an amazing upgrade!! I'm a New England Yankee and we're notoriously cheap...errr ahh... frugal! Good luck on whatever you decide...I do think you could use the money on tools though. Once you have that "awesome set of tools" you could buy the bad-*** box to put 'em in.

my thinking was always, buy the biggest box you can afford,
and not have to upgrade to a larger box for several years.

something else to consider is buying the smaller box and a locker
that will take care of a lot of blowmolded box storage.

later on, adding a top box, 2nd locker or side box is an option.

all depends on if you want to use the roller as a work top.

If those are what you are considering, 1022 no question. It's deep and has an extra 4" drawer, for me a 722 or 7022 would be usless. Maybe I'm bias, I have a 1022. One thing, 68" epiq seem to had for some pretty good deals. It's a wildy expesive box in a weak economy and the two dealers I know seem to price those pretty agressivally. When it comes to buying a box, buy the biggest possible, it maybe not the last box you buy, but at least you will be able to milk it out a while.

Snappy dealers really seem to be amenable right now to giving beaucoup discounts on boxes. I just bought the KRL7022 for 50% off list. In an offhand but friendly way I had asked my Snap On dealer if he had any deals on boxes of that approximate dimension & that it would have to be a heck of a deal since I was considering a $3000 Proto. The 7022 is being delivered day after tomorrow.

Today I had a long wheelbase pickup in my bay & I determined that the 7022's drawers wouldn't have been able to be opened all the way w/o contacting the bumper of the pickup. This would only happen, of course, with a longer vehicle, but it might be worth considering the narrower 722 for this reason. FYI

Get the deeper one if you can
It's amazing how much more they will hold

Can you pay cash?
If so generally the dealer will make great deals because it's an easy sell with minimal work

I am going to answer this honestly without talking price like you asked. I have never bought a box thats to big. I can honestly say that no matter what box I have bought I outgrew it 100 times quicker than I thought I would. Sure you can jam and pack tools in, but its so much nicer when you can neatly organize them and find them quickly. Buy as big as you can afford and as big as you have room for. I personally feel that a high end box is needed in something bigger than 40 inches if you can fill it, cheaper boxes dont seem to handle the high weight especially in the bigger sizes. Even when I wasn't wrenching pro it was nice to have a box that can hold wood working tools and nuts and bolts you keep for spares. It will fill. Trust me.

I have 5 small boxes: One roll cab w/one 70's Snappy KRA 61 top box on top, one Lista 36" high storage cabinet that makes a great toolbox & which I have a Matco top box on, & one tool cart. Soon I'll have 6. With more smaller boxes you can rearrange depending on where you end up working or whatever.

I guess it depends if you want or need the extra depth in the drawers.

I love this color:

Bust out the big guns and get either a KRL1023 or EpiQ. You won't regret it while you spend a year or two filling it up with tools.

Syndicate, funny you mention the KRL1023, there is a special on it right now that you can get the hutch and stainless top thrown in for 'free'. I am being offered a decent price (for a truck box anyway) to make an order on that and I might bite, I would just be paying on it a little longer.

There are three things to consider, drawer depth, drawer width and box height. The deeper drawers function better. Some like the full width drawer, but the box is taller. I like the lower box without the full width drawer.
