If clearance is that tight, I'll just use a box end.

Unless the bolt head is recessed! I have a full Gearwrench vortex set I use for my low profile needs. I sure would like a Snap-On set though!

I have a set and the work good. I use them on manifold bolts on 1.8T motor as they are slight recessed and there is not room for a standard socket+ratchet setup.

Good set to have, very helpful when needed. I would recomend their low profile ratchet for the set, makes a difference when clearance is really tight. I believe the part number is raf80.

The 1/4" set seems to make a lot more sense to me. I just got it, haven't needed it yet but it's a very cool little set. The ratchet is a lot smaller than it seems in the pictures.

True, but the speed of a ratchet sure is nice when you have a bolt with thread locker on it and you have to run it all the way out with a tool.

^this

I'm looking at these primarily for torque converter nuts. I'm seeing more and more nylon lock nuts used in this application. Makes using an offset box end wrench time consuming.

Now as far as the low profile ratchet is concerned, exactly how much of a low profile is it?? There's no thickness of the head measurements on the web-site.

I'm thinking the crafty low profile and/or premium ratchets would be in the same ball park?? They are about 1/3 thinner than the newer snappy ratchets I have

You have to click on each individual socket or ratchet on the SO site to get dimensions. For RAF80 head depth is 7/16".

I'd have to have a specific application before I'd get that low clearance socket set - and I'd have to be running into that application all the time to justify spending the money on it. I don't mind turning wrenches - I got some nice wrenches. :D

I have the 3/8 and 1/4 drive sets in metric. The 1/4 set is a pass thru type set. The 3/8 is a conventional ratchet and socket drive system. Not only are the sockets low profile but, the 3/8 square drive is also shorter. See the picture below comparing a standard F80 ratchet with the RAF80 low profile ratchet.

For most (say 97%) applications, you can get by using a gearwrench but, for those oddball situations, it's good to have it on hand.

few side notes:

1. the mountain set isn't sold out at tooltopia, it's a new set. tooltopia has added it to their website and will offere it when ISN have it ready for shipping. new tools are always listed that way.

2. someone was talking about torque converter bolts. My favorite tool for those (since they're usually tight) is the SK or ez red XXL ratcheting flexhead wrench. low profile and length for torque.

3. given the infrequent use of a low profile set and the expense of the snap on set, i would consider the gearwrench vortex pass through sets, the mountain set, or even the kobalt version. the gearwrench flexhead pass through ratchets offer more torque with additional length.

FWIW, Snappy has inverted torx sockets for use with the "1/4 drive" tool (11 mm drive) shown in Fedwrench's post. These are shown on page 22 of catalog 1200, but for some reason I can't get them on Snappy's website. Part numbers are RTLE40 through RTLE100 for E4-E10 and 106RTLE for the set of six sockets, I just picked up the E7 for Ford exhaust studs and haven't had the chance to use it yet, but it fits my Blackhawk 11mm flexhead ratchet wrench nicely.

Thanks for the pics fedwrench.

Yup, wouldn't you know it. I have only had my 1/4" drive shallow set a couple weeks and it SAVED MY **** tonight. I couldn't get a wrench, not even an open end, nor a shallow socket, to remove 2 13mm bolts holding the tensioner on my oil filter housing. Pics this weekend, couldn't tonight because I was filthy replacing a leaky oil filter housing gasket on my e46. I was grinning ear to ear that I had this little socket set ready to go.
