With all this snow coming down, has anyone had any issues with their pole barn roofs? It doesnt snow a whole lot here at one time very much, we have gotten about 10" of snow in the last 12 hours, just curious! On my pole barn I am set with 6x6 on 8' centers and trusses on 4' centers, not sure what it could handle on the calculated load? (Have not built anything yet)

I know in the late 90’s we were doing a lot of roof inspections on pre-fab metal buildings and warehouses due to the heavy snows we were getting up here at the time. Too many of them were not designed with adequate snow loads.

As I'm sure you are aware, but the local news reporters are pointing out to us, the steeper pitched roofs tend to shed the snow faster than a flatter pitched roof. I'm sure that somewhere on the interwebs there is a formula to calculate how much "average" snow a given design roof can handle. The biggest variable is the moisture content of the snow.

Bowling Green Ky checking in - we got about 9 inches or so but the snow here was very dry. I don't imagine the weight is that bad.

Not really. You can have two roof trusses, both made out of 2x4s and splice plates, and one will give you a 10psf dead load while the other will give you 50psf dead load.

If you’re designing with rafters, it is more straightforward - based primarily on size of the rafter and the slope of the roof as it acts as a simple beam.

No problem yet and we have plenty of snow. There might be some problems if the heavy snow stays on the roofs and then we get a warm day with heavy rain.
