I have a round roof vent as you look at it from the garage and it is square when you look at it from the outside. The other day there was some snow on the garage floor and about a inch and a half of snow on the rafters right under the vent. Never had this happen before. I can't beleve the vent went bad. Maybe a drift on the roof forced snow in the vent? Any one else have this problem? Jim

The vent is just that. It's a hole in your roof. The wind just blew the right way and let in some snow. You may want to check and see if the screen in the vent has rotted away.

When powdery snow is blowing, people would be shocked to see how much snow can build up with today's modern soffit systems. I've had 3" of snow in my attic (the first couple of feet in), I've heard of 12"+ from blizzards.

I had this happen about 11 years ago. I was home and found water dripping down around some interior doors.

I went up in the attic and found snow piled up below my roof vents. Scooped it up into a plastic tub and dumped it outside.

We had a very strong wind out of the south the day prior. My roof vents are on the south side of my roof, more or less.

Never had the problem again.

I am hoping that this is a one time problem. I could not believe how much snow was on the garage floor!

Guy at work was telling me that he had heard of blown in insulation all getting blown to one end of the attic during a storm. Not idea if its true but its wild to think about. Imagine being in your attic and its like a hurricane of insulation up there. :shocking:

Oh I can. Most of mine had melted and refrozen before I saw it. Had half inch of ice in a quarter of the shop. Nice epoxy so just let it be for weeks till it thawed and I could vacuum it out. Still debating laying plastic over my insulation if I ever blow some in.

We had some fiberglass insulation moved around in a small area once after a big storm. Only way we knew it was we had an energy audit done with an infra red camera and it showed a section of our ceiling with no insulation. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it in our own house. That came in thru a soffit vent. We have energy trusses, and vent chutes.

If the aerodynamics are right and you have enough air leakage elsewhere, snow/rain can blow in your vents. Especially if you are using multiple upper vent styles, like having intake soffits vents exhausting out gable vents simultaneously with mushroom or ridge vents in the same roof. Some of those upper vents can become intakes.
